90cm Folding Soft Pet Crate

Do cats prefer hard or soft carriers?

Compare hard and soft carriers for large cats using stability, closures, cleaning, ventilation, internal space and safe handling rather than appearance.

Preference varies, but for a large cat a sturdy carrier with a stable base, secure closures and adequate space is a practical starting point. Hard-sided designs can be easier to inspect and clean, while a soft carrier needs careful assessment of its structure, seams and zips. Do not choose solely because one material looks cosier. Bedding can add comfort to a suitable rigid carrier without removing essential internal space. Check the manufacturer's load limit and how the carrier is intended to be lifted and secured.

Your cat should be able to adopt a natural position rather than being folded into an attractive bag. Let it explore the carrier at home so unfamiliarity does not dominate the choice. If it remains distressed, discuss preparation and travel with your vet rather than assuming a different fabric alone will solve the problem. Check whether a soft carrier retains its usable shape when lifted with the intended load; an upright empty bag can look roomier than it is in use.
