Compared with a short-coated cat that needs little brushing, a Maine Coon may require more hands-on coat care and larger everyday equipment. However, maintenance varies with coat texture, age, health and tolerance of grooming. The most useful approach is a manageable routine rather than occasional long sessions after tangles develop. Include brief coat checks, clean food and water areas, litter maintenance and time to play. Keep grooming tools and supplies accessible so small jobs do not become major tasks.
If someone else will care for your cat, make sure they understand the routine and can handle the equipment safely. A large washable bed or removable tree cushion may make cleaning easier, but check the actual care instructions. Ease of ownership comes from matching the cat's needs to your available time, not from expecting any breed to be entirely self-maintaining. Place grooming supplies beside a comfortable grooming spot and keep a spare washable cover available so cleaning does not remove the only familiar resting surface.
