Plush Rectangular Cat Bed, 4 Sizes – The Velvet Nest

Should every cat have a separate hideaway?

Provide private hiding options that cats can reach freely, with suitable entrances and enough space to settle comfortably.

Each cat should have access to a hiding place it can use without being forced into contact with another cat. That does not mean every hideaway must carry a particular cat's name or remain permanently reserved. It means the home offers genuine alternatives when a cat wants privacy. A single enclosed den on a shared tower can become a bottleneck, especially if another cat sits outside its entrance.

Add a separate hideaway in a quiet location and look at the route to and from it. The opening should accommodate the cat comfortably, while the interior should allow normal settling and turning. Some cats favour covered beds; others prefer a box with a familiar blanket or a sheltered open bed. Let their behaviour guide the choice. Avoid pulling a resting cat out to encourage sharing, and keep children and other pets from disturbing these retreat spaces.

An enclosed tent and a condo on a tower offer different access patterns. Place the separate retreat where a cat can reach it without crossing the shared tower, rather than directly underneath the den that is already being guarded.
