Maine Coon Cat House 70cm | Two-Tier Wicker Bed – Wicker Maison

Are Maine Coons friendly or aggressive?

Understand friendly and defensive Maine Coon behaviour, recognise possible discomfort and learn when veterinary or behaviour advice is needed.

Maine Coons are often described as sociable, but behaviour cannot be guaranteed by breed. Any cat may hiss, swipe or bite if frightened, uncomfortable, overstimulated or unable to move away. Those signals should prompt you to look at the situation rather than label the cat as bad. Give it space and avoid punishment, which can make people seem less predictable. A previously relaxed cat that suddenly reacts to touch or becomes unusually defensive needs veterinary assessment because pain or illness may contribute.

For a new cat, keep early contact calm and offer choices about proximity. Comfortable hiding and resting areas can help, but they are part of the environment rather than a cure for aggression. If difficulties continue after health issues are addressed, ask your vet about referral to an appropriately qualified feline behaviour professional. Note the trigger and what happened immediately before the reaction; a pattern around lifting, a particular room or another animal is useful information.
