An Automatic Litter Tray Still Needs a Person Paying Attention

Keep a simple observation routine alongside automatic cleaning. Notice changes in litter tray use and know when a toileting problem needs urgent veterinary help.

Automatic cleaning can change the jobs involved in litter care, but it cannot replace noticing how your cat behaves. Keep a simple routine for checking the tray, its condition and the cat using it. An apparently tidy tray is not evidence that everything is well.

The Bothy

Know the cat's usual pattern

Pay attention to normal visits and any obvious changes in comfort or behaviour. In a multi-cat home, do not assume one cat's visible use tells you what is happening with the others. Record a concern in plain language rather than trying to diagnose it from a drawer or app screen.

Keep the maintenance check separate

Follow the exact instructions for waste removal, cleaning and inspection. The Bothy has a waste drawer and self-cleaning format, but that does not remove the need for care. A routine that only notices a full drawer can miss a change in the cat's behaviour.

Respond to changes, not just alerts

Repeated unsuccessful visits, distress or a sudden change in toileting should prompt veterinary advice. PDSA states that a cat unable to pass urine needs immediate veterinary attention. Do not wait for an app notification, a cleaning cycle or the next planned maintenance day if your cat cannot urinate.

Leave a clear handover for another carer

Write down the normal routine, the manual's location and your vet's contact details. Explain how to notice which cat is using the trays and what concerns should be reported. A short, practical handover is more useful than assuming the appliance will tell the carer everything.

Explore The Bothy with a realistic care plan alongside the product choice. Automation should fit into attentive cat care, with veterinary advice whenever a health concern arises.
