Use the cleaning schedule and methods in the manual for your exact model. There is no single weekly or monthly deep-clean interval that can be applied to every automatic litter tray. Use, litter and the unit’s design affect the work required.
Check the condition routinely
Check that your cat has access to a clean litter area, that waste has been separated as expected and that the receptacle is not full. Follow the indicated fill level and investigate error messages using the manual. Do not wait for a calendar date if the unit is soiled or not working normally.
Write down the model-specific routine
- When and how to empty the waste receptacle.
- When to replace litter and wash removable parts.
- Which cleaning products and methods are permitted for each component.
- How to clean sensors without damaging them.
- How to switch off, disconnect, dismantle and reassemble the unit as instructed.
- Which checks or resets are required before returning it to use.
Keep water away from electrical components
Only wash or immerse parts that the manufacturer explicitly identifies as washable. Follow its electrical-disconnection instructions, and do not add lubricant or cleaning chemicals unless the manual permits them.
As an example of why component instructions matter, Whisker’s Litter-Robot 4 cleaning guide specifies its own disassembly and washing procedure. That procedure is for that model; it must not be assumed to apply to a Bothy or Gentleman’s Abode.
If the manual does not answer your question
Ask the seller or manufacturer before proceeding. If the unit is damaged or malfunctioning, keep your cat away from it until the problem is resolved and provide a suitable alternative tray.
When shopping, request the care instructions before ordering. Compare the Bothy — ask about this product and Gentleman’s Abode — ask about this product, or read our manual versus automatic comparison.
FAQs
Should every automatic litter tray get a monthly deep clean?
Follow the exact model’s instructions and its condition in use. A universal monthly schedule may not match the unit, litter or household.
Can I wash the whole unit?
Only wash or immerse components explicitly identified as washable in the manufacturer’s instructions. Electrical parts and sensors may require different methods.
