Breed Overview

Chausies are a hybrid breed, crossing domestic cats with the jungle cat (Felis chaus), a wild species native to parts of Asia and the Middle East. TICA granted championship status in 2013. Still a relatively rare breed in the UK.

Size and Weight

Height: 38-51cm (15-20in)
Weight: 5.4-11.3kg (12-25lb), females typically at the lower end
Build: tall, long-legged, lean and supple, deep chest, flat sides

A very different build to every other breed covered in this series — don't assume Chausie sizing maps directly onto Maine Coon or Ragdoll furniture just because the weight numbers overlap. Real climbing and leaping ability matters more here than raw platform load capacity.

Personality

Highly intelligent, playful, athletic, and vocal — often described as dog-like in loyalty and trainability. Genuinely need human interaction; this isn't a breed that does well being left to entertain itself.

Grooming

The lowest-maintenance coat in this series alongside Bengal: short, dense, Abyssinian-like ticked coat that needs only weekly brushing.

Diet and Nutrition

Athletic, high-energy build means calorie needs track activity level closely — portion by real activity level and bodyweight. General guidance only — not a substitute for advice from your own vet, ideally one experienced with hybrid cats.

Exercise and Enrichment

Among the highest exercise requirements in this entire series, on par with Savannah: 30-45 minutes of genuine active playtime daily is a reasonable baseline. Climbing, jumping, and problem-solving toys are closer to a basic welfare requirement than an optional extra.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) — flagged in breed health guidance, causing vomiting, diarrhoea, discomfort, or gradual weight loss.
Generally considered a healthy breed overall from responsible breeders.

Living Requirements
