Maine Coons are one of the oldest natural cat breeds in North America, developed in the state of Maine from working farm cats prized for size, weather-resistant coats, and mousing ability — not bred for a show-ring look, which is part of why the breed still varies so much in colour and pattern today. They're the largest commonly-kept domestic cat breed, officially recognised since the late 1800s, and consistently rank among the most popular breeds in both the US and UK.

Personality

Maine Coons have a reputation as "gentle giants" for a reason: confident, sociable, and famously unbothered by their own size. They tend to follow their owners from room to room rather than demanding lap time — affectionate on their own terms, not clingy. Most are highly trainable and food-motivated (harness walks, simple tricks, even fetch aren't unusual for the breed), and many enjoy water in a way most cats don't — dripping taps and shower curtains are common targets. Energy runs moderate: bursts of real activity, then long stretches of watching the room from somewhere high up — which is the direct link to why vertical space and climbing structure matter more for this breed than a flatter, more sedentary one.

Grooming

The semi-long double coat is water-resistant and shockingly low-tangle for its length, but it isn't low-maintenance: 2-3 brushing sessions a week is the realistic minimum, rising to daily during spring and autumn heavy-shed periods. Mats form fastest behind the ears, under the arms, and around the britches (the leg fluff) — check those spots even on weeks the rest of the coat looks fine. Diet and Nutrition

Large-breed size means large-breed nutrition math: more calories overall, but not more per kg than a smaller cat needs — the mistake is scaling portions up by eye rather than by actual bodyweight and life stage. Because Maine Coons take 3-5 years to reach full size, many benefit from a large-breed or kitten-formula food for longer than the 9-12 months typical of smaller breeds — check the specific food's guidance rather than defaulting to the standard kitten-to-adult switch age. Vertical space is the highest-leverage enrichment tool for this breed specifically — their size and confidence mean they use height differently than a smaller, more cautious cat. Interactive play (wand toys, puzzle feeders) 10-15 minutes twice a day is a reasonable baseline; harness walks are unusually viable for this breed if introduced young.

Health Considerations

Three inherited conditions come up consistently in Maine Coon health guidance, and genetic testing exists for two of them:

• Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) — the most serious. A thickening of the heart wall that can develop any time from kittenhood into adulthood, most commonly age 3-7. Vets recommend periodic cardiac screening, particularly before breeding.
• Hip dysplasia — abnormal hip joint formation that can lead to early arthritis and reduced mobility. Weight management measurably reduces joint stress in a breed already carrying more mass than average.
• Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) — a recessive genetic condition affecting hind-leg strength, usually apparent by 3-4 months old. Not painful and doesn't reduce lifespan, but genetic testing before breeding prevents it outright.

Multi-cat households should size up litter provision specifically — the general rule of one tray per cat plus one extra applies doubly when each user is larger than standard.
