Breed Overview

The Maine Coon is a large, long-haired breed with roots in New England and a documented history extending back to the nineteenth century. Its shaggy coat, tufted paws and long tail are distinctive features. The Cat Fanciers’ Association breed profile records Maine Coons at the 1895 US cat show and CFA Championship recognition in 1976.

Personality

Maine Coons are often described as sociable, gentle and playful. Many enjoy interacting with people and investigating toys, and some are fascinated by water. These are breed tendencies, not promises about an individual cat. A cat’s experience, health and preferences matter too. Give your cat opportunities to approach, play and rest at their own pace rather than assuming they will enjoy being carried, sharing space or walking on a harness.

Grooming

Check the coat daily and build a calm, regular combing routine. Guidance varies: CFA describes combing Maine Coons two or three times a week, while Cats Protection recommends daily brushing for long-haired cats. Adjust to the actual coat, shedding and your cat’s ability to groom themselves; do not assume a long coat will stay free of tangles.

Use gentle, short sessions and tools your cat tolerates. If you find tight mats, ask your vet for help rather than pulling them out or cutting near the skin with scissors. Changes in self-grooming or skin condition also deserve a vet check. See Cats Protection’s long-haired cat grooming advice.

Diet and Nutrition

Choose a complete cat food appropriate for your cat’s life stage. Use the feeding guide as a starting point, then review portions against body condition, activity, neutering status and your vet’s advice. A large frame does not by itself tell you how many calories your cat needs.

Feed kittens a food formulated for growth. Many cats move to adult food around 12 months; the timing for your Maine Coon should follow the specific food’s guidance and an assessment of growth and body condition. Taking several years to develop the breed’s full adult appearance is not a reason on its own to keep feeding kitten food for years.

An ingredient list or a named meat in first place cannot establish a food’s nutritional quality on its own. Exercise and Enrichment

Offer several short play opportunities throughout the day and adapt the pace to your cat’s interest and ability. Wand toys, toys to chase and food puzzles offer different ways to explore and play. Put string and fishing-rod toys away after supervised play.

Provide suitable scratching surfaces, resting places and climbing opportunities. A tower can be one part of this setup, alongside interaction and space to retreat. There is no single tower height or fixed exercise duration that suits every Maine Coon. See Cats Protection’s play guidance.

Health Considerations

Discuss breed-related health screening with your vet and ask breeders for the parents’ documented results. A screening result needs to be interpreted in context; it is not a lifetime guarantee of health.

• Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) affects the heart muscle. A Maine Coon DNA test detects the A31P variant associated with increased risk, but cats without this variant can still develop HCM. Heart ultrasound and genetic testing answer different questions. Your vet can advise whether cardiac assessment is appropriate and when to repeat it. • Hip and mobility concerns: ask your vet to assess stiffness, lameness or a change in jumping ability rather than attributing it to your cat’s size.
• Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an inherited condition that causes muscle weakness. Genetic testing identifies the tested variant and can inform breeding decisions; taking a test does not treat an affected cat or prevent disease by itself. See UC Davis’s Maine Coon SMA test information.

Living Requirements

Plan around your individual cat and the usable space in your home. Provide quiet hiding spots, comfortable resting areas, scratching surfaces and accessible food, water and litter facilities. Elevated spaces can add choice, but check access routes, stability and resting-area dimensions before choosing furniture.

For multiple cats, provide separate essential resources and places where they can avoid one another. A useful starting point is one litter tray per cat plus an extra, positioned in separate suitable locations. A larger or automatic tray does not remove the need to consider choice and access.
