Maine Coons are large, slow-maturing cats, but a breed label cannot tell you whether a particular bed, perch or litter box will fit. Start with your cat’s measurements, then compare them with the usable space in the product.
How big do Maine Coons get?
The Cat Fanciers’ Association breed profile notes that mature males can reach or exceed 20lb (about 9.1kg), while females are usually smaller. Its breed article describes full development as often taking three to four years. These are breed observations, not a target weight or a prediction for an individual kitten.
A cat’s weight does not tell you its sleeping length, shoulder width or preferred resting position. For furniture shopping, those measurements are more useful than choosing the largest number in a breed chart. Ask your vet about an appropriate weight for your individual cat.

How to compare sizes at home
- Observe your cat resting naturally. Measure the area it occupies without forcing it into a position.
- Mark the product’s usable resting area on paper or cardboard. Compare it with your measurements.
- Mark the furniture’s full footprint on the floor and check doors, walkways and access for cleaning.
- For a tall tower, measure ceiling clearance and read the mounting requirements. For each perch or hammock, check its dimensions separately.
- If an interior measurement or load limit is missing, ask before ordering. Do not infer it from the product’s height or a lifestyle photograph.

Does a tall cat tree automatically suit a large cat?
No. Height describes vertical space. Perch size, condo openings, load limits and installation requirements still need checking.
Should I buy adult-sized furniture for a kitten?
Allow for growth, but check that the kitten can access and use the chosen layout now. Adult dimensions alone do not establish suitability for a kitten.
Can I choose a bed from nose-to-tail length?
Use the space your cat occupies while resting. A nose-to-tail measurement includes a tail that may curl around the body, so it is not the same as the sleeping area required.
