A Maine Coon may need a larger litter tray, but choose by the individual cat’s measurements and movement, not a breed label or the word “jumbo”. Check the usable interior and entrance before ordering.
Measure body length, excluding the tail
A common starting guideline is a tray around one and a half times the cat’s length from nose to the base of the tail. This is not the nose-to-tail-tip measurement. Catsan’s litter tray guidance explains this measurement. The cat still needs room to turn, dig and adopt its usual toileting posture.
Check the space your cat actually uses
- Interior: compare usable litter area with your cat, rather than relying on the external shell size.
- Entrance: check opening width, height and step-over height.
- Headroom: for covered trays, assess room above the litter surface as well as the floor area.
- Automatic models: check the exact model’s age, weight, litter and operating restrictions. A large outer casing does not prove a large usable interior.
Think about access and preference
Cats Protection recommends low sides for cats with mobility difficulties and a choice of trays. Size is only one part of a suitable setup; location, cleanliness and whether the cat accepts a cover also matter. Breed alone does not establish a particular digging style.
