Cat trees and wooden towers

Cat Towers Large Enough for Maine Coons: Sizes Compared

A cat tower large enough for a Maine Coon needs more than impressive height. The useful comparison is the space on its main beds, the size of any entrances, the route between levels and the stated weight limits. A 2-metre tower can still contain a compact basket, so compare each feature you expect your cat to use.

Which parts need to be roomy?

Start with the main resting surface. If your cat stretches out, record the length and width of that sleeping position; if they prefer curling up, consider the clear area within the bed’s sides. Then compare the top perch, baskets and condo separately. A tower can provide different spaces for climbing, sitting and sleeping without every level being the same size.

Three Giant Paws towers compared by their listed measurements

TowerHeightResting measurementsListed load information
Linden Lookout191 cmTop perch 49 × 49 × 11 cm; basket 36 × 36 × 8 cm15 kg per layer
Arbor Retreat123 cmTop perch 45 × 40 cm; cradle interior diameter 35 cm20 kg per layer
Ultimate PawHouse216 cmTop bed 50 × 30 cm externally; side baskets 35 cm acrossNo numeric load limit stated in the checked description

These are catalogue specifications, not independent load tests. External perch measurements include raised edges where present. The smaller surfaces on a tall tree should not be assumed to offer the same sleeping room as its largest bed. Ask Giant Paws for any missing measurements or load information before relying on them.

Does taller mean better for a large cat?

Height describes the overall climbing arrangement. It does not establish the size of the beds or guarantee the tower’s suitability for a particular cat. Ultimate PawHouse offers the tallest layout of these examples, while Linden and Arbor offer different perch shapes and materials. Compare the surfaces and route that matter in your home rather than choosing the highest number.

What makes a useful large-cat tower comparison?

  • Room to rest: compare the usable bed area and your cat’s resting position.
  • Clear access: note condo openings and the steps between levels.
  • Documented loads: preserve the distinction between a per-layer limit and a whole-product rating.
  • Space in your room: include projecting baskets and platforms in the footprint.
  • Correct assembly: follow the supplied fixing and stabilisation instructions.

Which design should you explore first?

If you want a tall wooden layout with several resting styles, start with Linden Lookout. If natural branches and a lower open arrangement appeal, compare Arbor Retreat. If height and two enclosed condos are the priority, explore Ultimate PawHouse while checking its missing load specification. The differences are more useful than calling every design the same kind of XXL tree.

Wooden Cat Trees for Maine Coons: Features to Compare

A wooden cat tree can bring natural tones into the room while giving your Maine Coon places to climb and rest. The most useful comparison is not simply tall versus short. Look at the resting surfaces, route between levels and floor space each design occupies.

Start with the main resting place

Some cats stretch across a flat perch; others curl into a basket. Compare those surfaces individually. A high weight rating describes a load limit, not the amount of sleeping space. Raised edges and cushions can also reduce the area inside a quoted outer measurement.

Linden Lookout offers a taller layout with a sheltered condo, padded top perch, basket and sling. Arbor Retreat has branching pear wood, white plush surfaces and a hanging cradle. Choose between the actual resting arrangements as well as the appearance.

Plan the climbing corner

Mark out the full footprint before choosing a height. Leave clear access around lower levels and avoid placing a tower where doors or busy walking routes interfere with it. Check whether resting areas project beyond the base rather than treating the base dimensions as the entire footprint.

What does “wooden” mean?

Read each material description. A visible natural branch, a wood-effect finish and an engineered-wood panel are different constructions. Do not assume that every wooden-looking tree is made entirely from solid timber.

Keep everyday care simple

Removable cushions can make access to resting surfaces easier. Follow their care labels and the tree’s assembly instructions. Use the prescribed stabilisation fittings and check fastenings regularly.

Explore the wooden cat tree collection or compare other layouts in cat trees and towers. Our Maine Coon cat tower guide provides another starting point for choosing features.

Large Cat Trees for Small Rooms: Plan the Whole Footprint

A small room can still have a useful cat climbing corner. The key is to plan the whole tree, including projecting beds and the route around it, before deciding how tall to go. The narrowest base is not automatically the best use of space.

Map the floor before shopping

Use removable tape or paper to mark the proposed footprint. Open nearby doors and drawers, walk past the area and consider where your cat will approach the first platform. Keep the product clear of routes you rely on every day.

Compare a freestanding tower with a ceiling design

A freestanding tree gives you a complete structure without needing an adjustable ceiling contact. A floor-to-ceiling model uses the height of a suitable room but has specific installation requirements. In either case, follow the product’s stabilisation instructions.

Floor-to-Ceiling Cat Tree 230–250cm | Adjustable Cat Tower – The Modern Vine
Floor-to-Ceiling Cat Tree 230–250cm | Adjustable Cat Tower – The Modern Vine Product illustration from the Giant Paws catalogue; use listed measurements for scale.

Modern Vine has a listed 54 × 34 cm base and adjusts from 230 to 250 cm. Its platforms extend beyond the base. Linden Lookout measures 75 × 56 × 191 cm overall and offers a different layout with a condo, basket and top perch. Compare those full arrangements rather than treating them as interchangeable towers.

Choose useful surfaces, not just more levels

Think about the places your cat will actually use: a main resting perch, a route to reach it and an accessible scratching surface. Several small platforms do not necessarily provide the same resting space as one larger perch. Record the bed and basket dimensions separately.

Leave room for the household

Plan where you will stand to clean cushions and tighten fittings. Avoid squeezing a tower into a gap that makes routine access difficult. Consider the appearance from the places where you sit most often as well as from the doorway.

Bring the measurements together

  • Room footprint and ceiling height.
  • Tree footprint including projections.
  • Resting surface dimensions.
  • Installation and stabilisation requirements.
  • Clear access for your cat and for cleaning.

Browse our cat trees and towers and wooden cat trees. For adjustable designs, compare Modern Vine with Feline Sovereign Spire; for a natural branch silhouette, explore Arbor Retreat.

Cat tree height versus perch size: what matters?

A taller cat tree offers a different vertical layout, but height does not describe the size of its beds. Separate climbing height from resting space when comparing towers for a larger cat.

Pear-Wood Cat Tree & Hanging Cradle – The Arbor Retreat
Pear-Wood Cat Tree & Hanging Cradle – The Arbor Retreat — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Compare the surfaces individually

Record the top perch, basket, condo and hammock dimensions. A tree can have one roomy resting surface and several smaller areas intended for different positions or movement.

Consider the route

Look at how your cat reaches the main bed, not just its height above the floor. Choose a layout whose access and surfaces match the way your cat uses furniture.

Cat tree weight ratings: per layer or total?

Weight ratings are only useful when the wording is preserved. A per-layer limit is not automatically a total-tree limit, and the weight of the product itself is not a rating for the cat.

Maine Coon Cat Tree 216cm | XL Cat Tower – Ultimate PawHouse
Maine Coon Cat Tree 216cm | XL Cat Tower – Ultimate PawHouse — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Keep the labels attached

Write the stated limit exactly as listed and check the selected model’s instructions. Do not add several per-layer limits together to invent a total capacity for a multi-cat household.

Include physical space

A load rating does not establish that a cat has enough sleeping room. Compare perch dimensions and entry openings alongside the rating rather than using body weight as the only purchase criterion.

Cat tree bases and projecting beds: measuring the footprint

A tree’s base can be smaller than the space occupied by its beds and platforms. Measuring only the base can lead to a tower that catches a door or extends into a walkway.

Wooden Cat Tree 191 cm – The Linden Lookout
Wooden Cat Tree 191 cm – The Linden Lookout — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Look from above

Use any plan view or dimension diagram to identify projecting parts. If overall width is not listed separately from the base, ask for it rather than assuming the base is the widest point.

Test the position

Mark the complete outline and open nearby doors. Leave room to reach lower fixings and remove cushions, not just enough space to stand the base on the floor.

Cat tree baskets versus flat perches

A basket and a flat perch create different resting shapes. Compare the interior of the basket with the usable flat area of the perch rather than assuming equal quoted widths mean equal room.

Pear-Wood Cat Tree & Hanging Cradle – The Arbor Retreat
Pear-Wood Cat Tree & Hanging Cradle – The Arbor Retreat — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Consider sleeping position

A curled sleeping position uses space differently from a stretched one. Think about the surfaces your cat chooses already and make the main resting area a deliberate part of the comparison.

Read cushion and rim measurements

Raised edges, padding and curved sides reduce the usable area. Keep external and internal measurements separate and avoid measuring room from a staged lifestyle photograph.

Cat tree condos: entrance and interior measurements

A condo adds a sheltered resting place to a cat tree. Its outer box dimensions do not show the size of the doorway or the clear space inside.

Maine Coon Cat Tree 216cm | XL Cat Tower – Ultimate PawHouse
Maine Coon Cat Tree 216cm | XL Cat Tower – Ultimate PawHouse — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Start with the entrance

Find the opening width and height, then consider the route to it from the nearest platform. A high condo with a small doorway offers a different arrangement from a broad open bed.

Ask for missing interior data

If the listing gives only overall tower dimensions, do not infer the condo size. Use measured internal space where supplied and request missing details before making a firm size claim.

Cat trees with removable cushions: what to look for

Removable cushions can make a tree easier to access for care, but removable does not always mean machine washable. Compare the fastening, fabric instructions and surfaces beneath the cushion.

Wooden Cat Tree 191 cm – The Linden Lookout

Check the care label

Look for the specified cleaning method and whether the cover separates from the filling. Avoid planning a machine-wash routine until the product instructions confirm it.

Think about reassembly

Check how cushions return to their platforms and whether fasteners remain accessible. A practical design is one you can put back securely after cleaning without dismantling unrelated sections.

Natural branch cat trees: comparing wood and layout

Natural branch styling creates a distinctive silhouette, but the visible wood is only one part of a cat tree. Compare the resting surfaces and branch arrangement with the room where it will stand.

Pear-Wood Cat Tree & Hanging Cradle – The Arbor Retreat

Look past the material name

Check which parts are natural wood and which are upholstered platforms or other components. A wooden appearance does not establish that every part is solid timber.

Plan around the silhouette

Branching designs can occupy space above the base in several directions. Compare the complete width and platform positions instead of choosing solely by the height or base rectangle.

How to compare cat tree platform spacing

Follow the route in order

Trace the path from the floor upwards. Consider whether the next platform is directly above, offset or accessed through an opening; these arrangements create different routes.

Avoid guessing from photographs

Perspective can make gaps look smaller than they are. Use dimensioned diagrams or ask for the measurements that matter to the route you are considering.

Cat trees for a living-room corner

A corner can make a cat tree feel part of the room, but both walls affect how its platforms fit. Measure the complete structure and keep the approach to lower levels clear.

Maine Coon Cat Tree 216cm | XL Cat Tower – Ultimate PawHouse

Check both directions

A tree with a small square base may have beds projecting to either side. Measure against the sofa, curtains and door swing rather than treating the corner as empty space.

Keep care access

Leave a way to reach fasteners, remove cushions and clean behind the structure. A tower wedged tightly between furniture may be difficult to maintain even if it technically fits.

Read the usable size

A cradle diameter may refer to the inner resting space or an outer support ring. Preserve that distinction and do not assume a quoted diameter describes a flat circular bed.

Follow the attachment instructions

Use only the supplied or explicitly compatible fittings. Inspect the attachment during routine checks and avoid adding a larger improvised hammock to a structure not specified for it.

Cat tree product weight: what it does and does not tell you

Keep two numbers separate

Record product weight and stated cat-load limit in different fields. A 28 kg tree does not automatically support a 28 kg animal or a combined load of that size.

Plan assembly and movement

Consider the package and assembled dimensions, the stairs and doorway route, and the instructions for handling the product. Finish stabilisation in its final position before allowing use.

Avoid scale assumptions

A cat in an illustration is not a measurement reference, and perspective can change the apparent proportions. Use labelled measurements for the tree, beds and entrances.

Keep an evidence list

Record the dimensions you found and mark any missing ones. This creates a clear comparison without turning a visually convincing image into an unsupported claim about fit.

Floor-to-ceiling cat trees

Floor-to-Ceiling Cat Trees: A Practical Measuring Guide

A floor-to-ceiling cat tree uses vertical space to create a climbing route. Choosing one starts with the room: ceiling height, floor surface, installation requirements and clearance around the platforms all matter. An adjustable height range is a useful starting point, not a promise that every ceiling is suitable.

Measure at the exact installation position

Measure from the finished floor to the ceiling where the tree will stand. Note sloping ceilings, beams or uneven surfaces. Follow the product’s installation instructions for the required ceiling type and fixing method; do not assume a tension design can be installed on any surface.

Floor-to-Ceiling Cat Tree – The Feline Sovereign Spire Product illustration from the Giant Paws catalogue; use listed measurements for scale.

Two Giant Paws layouts

ProductAdjustment rangeListed base
Modern Vine230–250 cm54 × 34 cm
Feline Sovereign Spire240–280 cm40 × 40 cm

A room height outside a product’s range needs a different solution. Within the range, installation compatibility still depends on the supplied instructions and your room. Do not add improvised supports to bridge a height gap.

The base is not the whole footprint

Platforms project beyond the base on these designs. Leave room around them and along your cat’s route between levels. Include the space needed for access during installation and later adjustment. A corner that accommodates the base may still be too restricted for the complete tree.

Compare the resting spaces

Modern Vine’s listed basket is 30 cm in diameter and its round perch is 35 cm across. Its two platforms are 26.5 × 49 cm and 26.5 × 34.5 cm. Those measurements offer a more practical comparison than the overall height alone, particularly for a cat that likes to lie stretched out.

After installation

Follow the instructions for tension, fixings and regular checks. Stop use if the fitting becomes loose. If your room does not suit a ceiling-mounted design, consider a freestanding tree with the recommended stabilisation instead.

View Modern Vine and Feline Sovereign Spire, or browse all cat trees and towers to compare ceiling and freestanding layouts.

Floor-to-ceiling cat trees for taller rooms

A taller room needs a tree whose stated adjustment range covers the intended installation height. The tallest-looking photograph is not a reliable guide to the correct model.

Floor-to-Ceiling Cat Tree 230–250cm | Adjustable Cat Tower – The Modern Vine
Floor-to-Ceiling Cat Tree 230–250cm | Adjustable Cat Tower – The Modern Vine — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Measure before choosing

Take the floor-to-ceiling measurement at the actual fitting point. The Sovereign Spire range is listed as 240–280 cm; a height outside the range calls for another model or solution.

Check compatibility as well

Height is only one condition. The floor, ceiling surface and installation method must also match the supplied instructions, and the projecting platforms need clear space around them.

Floor-to-ceiling cat trees for lower ceilings

A lower ceiling may rule out some adjustable towers even if their bases are compact. Compare the minimum stated height as carefully as the maximum.

Floor-to-Ceiling Cat Tree – The Feline Sovereign Spire

Use the correct range

Modern Vine is listed at 230–250 cm. Do not assume the product can be shortened beyond its stated range by removing a section unless the manufacturer explicitly describes that configuration.

Plan an alternative

If the room falls outside the adjustment range or does not suit the installation method, compare freestanding towers. Keep the resting surfaces and route in the decision rather than choosing by height alone.

Modern Vine or Sovereign Spire: comparing room requirements

Modern Vine and Sovereign Spire have different adjustment ranges and base shapes. Comparing the room first helps decide which layout deserves a closer look.

Compare the height ranges

Modern Vine is listed at 230–250 cm; Sovereign Spire at 240–280 cm. A ceiling height inside both ranges does not remove the need to check surface and fitting requirements.

Compare the footprint

Modern Vine has a 54 × 34 cm base and Sovereign Spire a 40 × 40 cm base. Both have projecting platforms, so neither base measurement should be treated as the complete working footprint.

Floor-to-ceiling cat tree maintenance checks

An adjustable tree needs the checks specified in its instructions after installation. Keep those requirements accessible rather than discarding the manual once assembly is finished.

Know what to inspect

Follow the directions for tension, fixings and stability. Look at the platform attachments and resting surfaces as well as the ceiling contact point.

Respond to movement

If a fitting loosens or the structure no longer feels secure, stop use and follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance. Avoid adding improvised wedges or substitute hardware as a quick fix.

Litter trays and boxes

Maine Coon Litter Box: Choosing the Right Size

A good Maine Coon litter box gives your cat room to turn and dig, offers an accessible entrance and is straightforward to clean. Start with usable space, then choose the shape that works for your cat and your home. “XL” and “XXL” labels are useful for browsing, but they are not standard measurements.

Which measurements matter?

Record the tray’s usable internal length and width, the entrance height and, for covered boxes, the space beneath the roof. Overall dimensions tell you how much room the product occupies; they do not tell you exactly how much room your cat has inside. Steps, surrounds and curved walls can all reduce the usable area.

Allow extra room outside the box for your cat to approach and turn. In a narrow utility room, include the space you need to lift a cover or pull out a tray.

Open or enclosed: two different layouts

DesignListed dimensionsUseful distinction
Sterling Court69.8 × 50.3 × 29.8 cm overall; 64 × 44 cm tray interiorOpen top, high surround and a 20 cm entrance height
Grand Gallery70 × 50 × 46.5 cm overall; 69.5 × 49.5 × 15 cm steel trayEnclosed design with a front cover that lifts for cleaning

The Grand Gallery tray dimensions describe the listed basin, not a separately verified usable interior. Its front opening measures 40.1 × 26.4 cm. Choose by the full layout rather than comparing overall lengths alone.

Where should the litter box go?

Cats Protection recommends a quiet location, away from food and water, and one tray per cat plus an extra. Spread trays across suitable locations rather than lining them up together. A larger box does not replace the need for separate toileting options in a multi-cat home.

Is a covered litter box always better?

No single layout suits every cat. An enclosure changes the space above and around the tray, while an open design leaves the top unobstructed. Consider the design your cat already uses comfortably before changing several parts of their routine at once.

Choose your next tray

Compare our cat litter trays and boxes using the product measurements. For an open steel design, explore Sterling Court; for an enclosed layout with lifting front access, explore Grand Gallery.

Stainless Steel Cat Litter Trays: Open or Enclosed?

Choosing a stainless steel cat litter tray is about the whole design, not just the material in the base. A high surround, hood, entrance step and removable panels each change how the tray works in your home. Start by deciding how you want to access it for daily scooping.

When an open tray makes sense

An open top keeps the litter surface within reach without lifting a hood. It also removes a roof-height constraint. High sides can help contain kicked litter, although they do not guarantee a mess-free floor. The entrance remains important: high sides and a low entrance are separate features.

Maine Coon XXL Litter Tray 70cm | High-Sided Stainless Steel – The Sterling Court
Maine Coon XXL Litter Tray 70cm | High-Sided Stainless Steel – The Sterling Court Product illustration from the Giant Paws catalogue; use listed measurements for scale.

Sterling Court combines a stainless steel base with a polypropylene surround. Its listed interior is 64 × 44 cm, its entrance height is 20 cm and its overall size is 69.8 × 50.3 × 29.8 cm. That entrance is a meaningful part of the design, particularly when ease of stepping in matters.

When an enclosure makes sense

A covered box gives the litter area a more contained appearance. It also adds panels and openings to the cleaning routine. Look at how much of the cover lifts and whether you can reach the corners easily in the position where the box will stand.

Grand Gallery has a stainless steel tray beneath a grey enclosure. Its front cover lifts through 90 degrees, giving access for scooping. The listed steel tray is 69.5 × 49.5 × 15 cm; the complete box is 70 × 50 × 46.5 cm. The basin measurement and the full enclosure measurement answer different questions.

Cleaning the complete product

Steel is only one material in these designs. Clean the base, plastic surround, joints and entrance step according to the supplied care instructions. Empty and dry the parts thoroughly before reassembly. Neither a steel surface nor an enclosed cover removes the need for regular cleaning.

A simple buying checklist

  • Compare usable tray space, not only the exterior.
  • Note entrance height and any door or hood.
  • Allow room to lift the cover or remove the base.
  • Choose a location with space for your cleaning routine.

Browse stainless steel and other cat litter trays. For the size question, read our Maine Coon litter box guide.

Litter box size: outside measurements versus usable space

An advertised length can describe the entire litter box, including its step or enclosure. The measurement your cat uses is the space inside the tray. Keep those two measurements in separate columns while comparing designs.

Maine Coon XXL Litter Tray 70cm | High-Sided Stainless Steel – The Sterling Court
Maine Coon XXL Litter Tray 70cm | High-Sided Stainless Steel – The Sterling Court — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Read the dimension diagram carefully

Look for words such as overall, basin, internal and entrance. A basin measurement may include the rim, so it should not automatically be treated as the clear floor area. If only overall measurements are listed, ask for the missing interior dimensions.

Plan the approach as well

Mark out the box on the floor and leave an open approach to the entrance. A tray that occupies the available gap exactly can still be awkward to enter or to remove for cleaning.

High-sided litter trays: what to compare

High sides are one way to contain litter around an open tray. The important distinction is between the surround height and the entrance height: they affect different parts of everyday use.

Maine Coon XXL Litter Tray 70cm | High-Sided Stainless Steel – The Sterling Court
Maine Coon XXL Litter Tray 70cm | High-Sided Stainless Steel – The Sterling Court — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Look at the doorway

A tall back wall does not tell you how high your cat must step at the front. Record the front entrance measurement separately and compare the shape of the opening, especially when replacing a tray your cat already uses comfortably.

Look at the joints

A removable surround adds seams and clips to the cleaning routine. Check how the upper section comes away and where granules can collect, rather than choosing solely by the tallest wall.

Covered litter boxes: doors, roofs and access

A covered litter box changes the layout above the tray as well as the appearance of the litter area. Compare the entrance, roof and cleaning openings together instead of treating a cover as a purely decorative choice.

Separate cat access from cleaning access

The opening your cat walks through may be different from the opening you use for scooping. Read which panels lift or detach and allow enough space in the room to operate them fully.

Keep the setup familiar

Consider the covered or open arrangement your cat currently chooses. The presence of a hood does not establish that a particular cat will prefer the box, and a larger outer shell does not prove more space inside.

Open litter trays: planning a tidy corner

An open litter tray leaves the top accessible for scooping and avoids a roof over the litter area. A tidy setup still depends on the tray position, entrance and space around it.

Maine Coon XXL Litter Tray 70cm | High-Sided Stainless Steel – The Sterling Court

Give cleaning its own space

Leave enough room to lift the tray or remove the surround without pushing nearby furniture out of the way. Decide where the scoop and waste bag will be kept before choosing the narrowest possible corner.

Choose the surround deliberately

Compare low-front and high-surround arrangements using the actual entrance measurements. Open does not necessarily mean easy stepping access: some open designs still have a substantial front threshold.

70 cm cat litter boxes: comparing the details

Maine Coon XXL Litter Tray 70cm | High-Sided Stainless Steel – The Sterling Court

Put like measurements together

Compare overall size with overall size and interior size with interior size. Where a product lists basin dimensions only, keep that label in your notes instead of silently treating it as a usable interior measurement.

Make the format work for you

An open top and a lifting front cover offer different cleaning access. Choose the layout you can reach easily in the intended room rather than assuming the longer-looking box must be more practical.

Litter tray entrance height: a buying guide

The entrance is an easily missed measurement when shopping for a large litter tray. A generous floor area and a convenient step-in route are separate qualities.

Maine Coon XXL Litter Tray 70cm | High-Sided Stainless Steel – The Sterling Court
Maine Coon XXL Litter Tray 70cm | High-Sided Stainless Steel – The Sterling Court — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Measure the front edge

Look for the height your cat crosses at the actual entrance, not the height of the back wall. A slotted step may be part of that route; confirm how it attaches and whether the listed height includes it.

Consider the route outside

Leave a clear landing area before the doorway. Avoid placing the entrance where a cabinet leg or narrow wall gap forces an immediate tight turn before the cat reaches the tray.

Litter-catching steps: useful features to check

A slotted entrance step provides a place for some loose granules to fall from paws. It is a practical feature to compare, but it should not be treated as a guarantee that no litter will reach the floor.

Maine Coon XXL Litter Tray 70cm | High-Sided Stainless Steel – The Sterling Court
Maine Coon XXL Litter Tray 70cm | High-Sided Stainless Steel – The Sterling Court — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Include the step in your plan

Check whether the overall dimensions already include the step. Account for the room needed to approach it and for any part that projects beyond the main tray body.

Remember the underside

Find out how the step is removed or emptied. A feature that catches granules also needs accessible cleaning, so leave enough space to detach it without moving the full box every time.

Setting up a litter tray in a utility room

A utility room can offer a practical washable floor, but the available corner needs to work around appliances, doors and everyday activity. Plan the tray as something that must remain accessible.

Maine Coon XXL Litter Tray 70cm | High-Sided Stainless Steel – The Sterling Court

Check appliance clearance

Open machine doors and storage cupboards while the tray footprint is marked out. Avoid a layout where using household equipment repeatedly blocks the tray entrance or leaves no room to lift a cover.

Choose an undisturbed position

Keep the toileting area separate from food and water. A quiet accessible spot is preferable to a narrow gap beside noisy equipment; consider another room if the utility layout cannot provide that.

How much space should surround a litter box?

The box dimensions describe the product, not its complete working area. You also need room for your cat to approach and for you to scoop, open panels and remove the tray.

Maine Coon XXL Litter Tray 70cm | High-Sided Stainless Steel – The Sterling Court
Maine Coon XXL Litter Tray 70cm | High-Sided Stainless Steel – The Sterling Court — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Test the everyday movements

Mark the footprint and practise the movements you will make when cleaning. A hinged cover needs clearance above it, while a removable tray needs an extraction route in front or to the side.

Avoid a fixed clearance guess

There is no single spare-space number that suits every product. Follow the dimensions and opening mechanism of the model you choose, and leave practical access rather than fitting the shell tightly between furniture.

Choosing a litter tray for daily scooping

Daily access is a useful way to compare litter trays. A product can look tidy in a photograph while being awkward to reach once it is positioned under a shelf or against a wall.

Maine Coon XXL Litter Tray 70cm | High-Sided Stainless Steel – The Sterling Court
Maine Coon XXL Litter Tray 70cm | High-Sided Stainless Steel – The Sterling Court — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Follow the scoop route

Look at how you will reach the corners and whether a cover must be lifted first. Avoid layouts that require moving a heavy filled tray simply to perform routine scooping.

Store accessories nearby

A scoop holder can keep equipment close, but its position may add to the working footprint. Leave room to retrieve the scoop and clean its holder as part of the routine.

Treat it as a separate location

Cats Protection recommends one tray per cat plus one extra, with trays spread across suitable locations. A row of boxes in one corner does not offer the same choice of locations.

Match the space honestly

Do not choose a smaller tray solely because the second room has a narrow gap. Start with the usable tray space and entrance, then find a position that accommodates the complete product.

Start with the shell

Note length, width and height of the complete product. Then find separate arrows for the basin and entrance. Do not infer an unlabelled measurement by comparing the apparent size of a cat in a lifestyle image.

Keep unknowns marked unknown

A photo is not a scale drawing. If an interior length or opening height is absent, record it as missing and request the specification rather than estimating a precise figure.

Litter furniture and cabinets

Cat Litter Box Furniture: Planning Space for Large Cats

Cat litter box furniture can bring a tray into a more coordinated room, but the cupboard must work around the litter setup. Plan the tray first and the furniture second. A cabinet that looks large from the outside can have a much smaller compartment behind its doors.

Measure the tray and cabinet separately

Write down the tray’s full outside dimensions, including its rim, handles and surround. Then compare them with the cabinet’s internal compartment. Leave practical room to slide the tray out, reach around it and clean the interior. A very tight fit may look tidy but make daily access awkward.

Cat Litter Box Enclosure 142 cm | Shelving – The Library Litter Cabinet
Cat Litter Box Enclosure 142 cm | Shelving – The Library Litter Cabinet Product illustration from the Giant Paws catalogue; use listed measurements for scale.

A real example: the Library Litter Cabinet

The Library Litter Cabinet measures 60 × 45 × 142 cm overall. Its listed internal compartment is 56 × 45 × 42 cm, and the side entrance is 24 × 26 cm. The 142 cm overall height includes shelving; it is not the height available above the tray.

The 70 cm-class Grand Gallery and Sterling Court trays described in our litter guide exceed this cabinet’s 56 cm internal length. They should not be presented as matching accessories for it. Litter trays and decorative accessories are not included with the Library cabinet.

Plan the route into the cabinet

A cat needs an approach to the side entrance as well as room around the tray. Avoid positioning that opening directly against a wall or another piece of furniture. Consider the route from the room, through the cabinet entrance and into the tray as one continuous path.

Make cleaning access part of the layout

Mark the cabinet footprint on your floor and include the space needed to open its doors. Ask whether you can lift the tray out without tilting it sharply. Keep cleaning supplies conveniently nearby but stored securely away from pets.

Consider shelving and installation

Follow the supplied installation instructions, including the anti-tip fitting where provided. The Library cabinet includes an anti-tip kit. Shelving is an additional feature; it does not increase the litter compartment’s capacity.

Explore cat litter tray enclosures and cabinets and compare each compartment with your chosen tray. If an open layout works better for your room, browse our litter trays and boxes instead.

Litter cabinet doors: planning cleaning clearance

Doors are a useful way to conceal a tray, but they need room to open. Include that working area when deciding where litter furniture will stand.

Measure with the doors open

The cabinet width alone does not show how much floor space is needed during cleaning. Consider nearby walls, chair legs and appliances that might prevent the doors opening fully.

Plan tray removal

Imagine removing the actual tray you intend to use. If it would need to tilt steeply to clear the opening, choose another arrangement before filling and installing it.

Litter cabinet entrances: side access or front access?

The direction of a litter cabinet entrance changes where the furniture can sit. A side doorway may work well beside a sofa but become inaccessible when pushed into a close-fitting alcove.

Draw the entrance on the floor plan

Mark the side that must remain clear before measuring the available gap. Do not assume a product’s door can be moved to the opposite side unless the assembly instructions confirm that option.

Separate two openings

The cleaning doors and the cat entrance may be on different faces. Leave access to both rather than arranging the cabinet only around the doors you open yourself.

Litter furniture with shelves: useful storage choices

Shelves can make litter furniture useful beyond the enclosed compartment. Compare the storage layout independently from the tray space so a tall unit does not create a misleading impression of capacity.

Cat Litter Box Enclosure 142 cm | Shelving – The Library Litter Cabinet

Read internal dimensions first

The overall height may mostly describe shelving above a smaller compartment. Choose the tray arrangement using the internal length, width, height and entrance, then decide whether the shelves suit your storage needs.

Keep the unit stable

Follow the assembly instructions and fit the supplied anti-tip hardware as directed. Do not use the presence of shelving as a reason to ignore installation requirements or stated shelf limits.

Can a large litter tray fit inside a cabinet?

Matching a tray to a cabinet requires two sets of dimensions. The tray’s outside measurements must fit within the furniture’s internal compartment, with enough access left for use and cleaning.

Cat Litter Box Enclosure 142 cm | Shelving – The Library Litter Cabinet
Cat Litter Box Enclosure 142 cm | Shelving – The Library Litter Cabinet — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Do not match by name alone

Large, XL and Maine Coon labels are not a sizing system shared across furniture and trays. Compare the actual rim, step and hood dimensions with the available compartment.

Check before buying a pair

A tray that fits on the cabinet floor can still be too tall beneath its roof or awkward behind the entrance. Verify the complete arrangement and avoid presenting unmatched products as a bundle.

Litter cabinet placement in a living room

A litter cabinet can coordinate with living-room furniture, but its location should keep the cat entrance clear and cleaning practical. A neat photograph is not the same as a workable daily arrangement.

Cat Litter Box Enclosure 142 cm | Shelving – The Library Litter Cabinet

Look beyond the front view

Check the side doorway, ventilation openings and front-door swing. Leave a route that does not disappear whenever a chair moves or a cupboard is opened.

Think about room activities

Avoid a position that turns the entrance into a busy walkway. Keep the litter area separate from feeding, and prioritise access over making the unit disappear completely into the furniture arrangement.

Litter cabinets with scratching areas: compare both features

Cat Litter Box Enclosure 142 cm | Shelving – The Library Litter Cabinet — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Assess the compartment first

Confirm the tray space, entrance and cleaning route before treating the extra scratching area as a deciding feature. An appealing attachment does not make a small compartment larger.

Assess the scratching surface separately

Look at the accessible surface, its orientation and how it is secured. Allow room for your cat to use that area without standing directly in the cabinet entrance.

Scratching posts and boards

Tall scratching posts: usable surface versus total height

A scratching post’s total height can include a decorative top or base. Compare the accessible scratching section and the way it is supported rather than choosing on height alone.

Cat Scratching Post 60cm | Wide Post & Ball Track – Scratch Central
Cat Scratching Post 60cm | Wide Post & Ball Track – Scratch Central — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Read the layout

Look for where the rope or other scratching material starts and stops. A tall product with a short wrapped section differs from a post that offers a longer uninterrupted surface.

Think about the position

Allow space around the post for use and follow the setup instructions. Do not rely on a wall or chair to hold a freestanding post upright unless that arrangement is specified.

Sisal scratching posts versus scratching mats

A post and a mat provide different orientations and occupy different parts of a room. Comparing them starts with the surfaces your cat already uses, then moves to material and fixing details.

Sisal Cat Scratching Mats 80 × 50 cm | Set of 2 – The Sisal Pair — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Choose an orientation

A vertical post and a flat mat are not interchangeable shapes. Look at the accessible surface area and the space around it rather than comparing only product length.

Check how it stays in place

Follow the product’s securing instructions. A mat or post that moves unexpectedly may need a different placement or the prescribed fixing arrangement, not an improvised attachment.

Scratching posts with broad bases: what to compare

Use the complete specifications

Compare post height, base dimensions, materials and the supplied instructions together. Do not substitute the product’s weight for a stated cat-load rating.

Plan the surrounding area

Leave room around the scratching surface rather than wedging the base into the smallest gap. Keep the intended use area clear of movable furniture and loose objects.

Replacing a worn scratching surface: what to check

Inspect the attachment

Look for loose components and damaged fixings as well as worn material. Stop using a damaged item where the instructions require it and obtain the correct replacement guidance.

Avoid improvised substitutions

A similar-looking rope or panel may not attach in the intended way. Confirm compatibility rather than changing the structure or fastening method without supporting instructions.

Consider the whole use area

The base is only part of the footprint. Allow space around the post or board so nearby furniture does not block the intended surface.

Keep it practical

Choose a position you can inspect and clean around. A post hidden tightly behind a cabinet may save visual space but make the surface and fittings harder to reach.

Allow everyday clearance

Reclining sections, footstools and side tables can change the available space. Test them with the bed footprint marked out before settling on a position.

Keep the bed accessible

Leave room to lift the cushion or cover for cleaning. A bed tucked under furniture may be difficult to maintain even if the outer dimensions fit.

Cat hideaways versus open beds

An open bed and a hideaway provide different resting arrangements. Compare the entrances and sleeping surfaces with the places your cat already chooses at home.

Maine Coon Cat House 70 cm | Two Tiers – Wicker Maison
Maine Coon Cat House 70 cm | Two Tiers – Wicker Maison — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Think about visibility and shape

An open cushion leaves the resting area unobstructed; an enclosed house adds walls and a roof. The best choice depends on the actual layout, rather than the word cosy in the description.

Compare care access

Check how the cushion is removed and whether the inside can be reached easily. A sheltered shape should still be practical to inspect and clean.

Choosing separate beds for a multi-cat room

Several beds give you more placement choices than one large piece, while a two-tier house keeps resting surfaces within a shared footprint. Compare the room layout before deciding.

Maine Coon Cat Bed 76cm | Washable Cover – The Silver Velvet Nest

Do not count cushions as capacity

Two cushions in a product do not prove that any two cats will choose to use it together. Read the load wording and dimensions and consider separate locations as well.

Plan more than one approach

Avoid blocking one resting area behind another piece of furniture. Keep each bed accessible so the room offers genuinely different places to settle.

A Giant Paws example to compare

Cat bed colour and removable covers

Colour helps a bed coordinate with the room, but the cover construction affects everyday care. Confirm both before choosing a variant based on a lifestyle image.

Maine Coon Cat Bed 76cm | Washable Cover – The Silver Velvet Nest

Check what is included

A removable cushion does not necessarily mean spare covers are supplied or available. Use the product listing and care label rather than assuming a replacement system exists.

Choose a practical position

Consider where the bed will be lifted and cleaned, then choose the finish you prefer. The best-looking photograph cannot tell you whether the whole cover fits your washing routine.

Cat bed dimensions: measuring a favourite resting spot

Your cat’s usual resting place can help you think about shape and space. Use it as a practical observation, then compare the actual sleeping area of the bed you are considering.

Maine Coon Cat Bed 76cm | Washable Cover – The Silver Velvet Nest

Observe different positions

A cat may curl up at one time and stretch out at another. Record the space used in the positions you want the new bed to accommodate instead of measuring only the smallest curled shape.

Compare the right surfaces

Use the cushion or interior dimensions where supplied. Outer bed dimensions include bolsters, frames or overhangs and may not match the available sleeping area.

Feeding bowls and accessories

Automatic cat feeders: hopper capacity versus portion size

A feeder’s litre capacity describes its storage hopper. It does not tell you the weight of each dispensed portion or how many days it will last in your household.

4.5L Automatic Cat Feeder with Timer
4.5L Automatic Cat Feeder with Timer — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Keep capacity and dispensing separate

Check the compatible food type and the manufacturer’s portion settings. Different food shapes and densities can make a volume-based assumption unreliable.

Plan refill and cleaning access

Leave room to lift the lid and remove the bowl. Choose a location that works for refilling as well as daily use, and follow the care instructions for parts that contact food.

A Giant Paws example to compare

4.5L Automatic Cat Feeder with Timer

  • Hopper capacity: 4.5 litres
  • Up to six scheduled meals

Timer cat feeders versus Wi-Fi feeders

A timer feeder and a Wi-Fi model offer different control arrangements. Choose by the features actually listed and how you want to manage the feeding routine.

4.5L Automatic Cat Feeder with Timer
4.5L Automatic Cat Feeder with Timer — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Check the control method

Read whether schedules are set on the unit, in an app or both. Do not assume remote control, notifications or a camera are included because a different model has them.

Plan for the exact model

Review the power requirements and any stated backup arrangements. Test the intended schedule according to the instructions before relying on it for the normal routine.

Dual-bowl cat feeders: comparing the layout

A dual-bowl feeder places two bowls around one dispensing system. The arrangement should be compared by bowl access and dispensing features rather than treated as automatic individual feeding control.

6L Dual-Bowl Wi-Fi Cat Feeder with 1080p Camera
6L Dual-Bowl Wi-Fi Cat Feeder with 1080p Camera — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Read how food is delivered

Check whether the product states separate control or identification for each cat. Two bowls alone do not establish that each animal receives or eats a separate allocation.

Measure both sides

Include the bowls in the full footprint and leave access to each one. Avoid a corner placement that makes one bowl awkward to reach.

A Giant Paws example to compare

6L Dual-Bowl Wi-Fi Cat Feeder with 1080p Camera

  • 6-litre dry-food hopper with two stainless-steel bowls

6L Dual-Bowl Wi-Fi Cat Feeder with 1080p Camera — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Check the viewing features

Look for the listed resolution, app requirements and any stated audio functions. Do not assume cloud recording, subscriptions or continuous monitoring are included without confirmation.

Keep the bowl in view

Plan the unit’s position using the manufacturer’s guidance. A camera feature does not remove the need to check dispensing, refill the hopper and clean food-contact parts.

Automatic feeders for wet and dry food: reading compatibility

Food compatibility is a model-specific feature. A feeder designed around a dry-food hopper should not be treated as suitable for wet food unless the instructions explicitly say so.

Six-Meal Automatic Cat Feeder – Wet & Dry Food Timer
Six-Meal Automatic Cat Feeder – Wet & Dry Food Timer — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Check the mechanism

A compartment-style timer and a hopper dispenser handle food differently. Read the food-type guidance and the cleaning instructions for the particular model.

Avoid storage assumptions

A timer does not by itself establish safe food storage conditions. Follow the food packaging and feeder instructions, including any specified cooling arrangements and duration limits.

A Giant Paws example to compare

Six-Meal Automatic Cat Feeder – Wet & Dry Food Timer

  • I want six timed compartments rather than one shared reservoir.
  • I serve compatible wet or dry food in distinct portions.
  • I value a compact feeder with a clear LED time and battery display.

Raised cat bowls: comparing the stand and bowl

A raised bowl has two sets of dimensions: the food container and the stand around it. Compare both rather than treating stand height as the only relevant feature.

Adjustable Raised Cat Feeder with Two Steel Bowls
Adjustable Raised Cat Feeder with Two Steel Bowls — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Look at bowl access

Note the bowl opening, depth and how it sits in the stand. A taller stand does not automatically make a feeding position more suitable for every cat.

Plan cleaning

Check whether the bowls lift out and which parts are dishwasher-safe, if any. Follow the care instructions rather than extending a bowl’s cleaning method to a wooden or metal stand.

A Giant Paws example to compare

Adjustable Raised Cat Feeder with Two Steel Bowls

  • Two removable 1.4 litre steel bowls
  • Bowl height settings: 20, 23 or 26 cm

Adjustable feeding stands: what changes with each setting?

An adjustable stand lets you alter its specified position, but the settings need to be used as directed. Compare the actual range and locking arrangement before choosing it.

Adjustable Raised Cat Feeder with Two Steel Bowls

Read the permitted positions

Check which heights or angles are provided and how the stand is secured. Do not assume an adjustment can be set anywhere between marked positions.

Use the complete footprint

Some adjustments change the angle or space occupied by the bowls. Leave access around the stand and recheck its stability after changing the setting.

Read the cleaning guidance

Check which parts can be washed by which method. A decorative finish or attached stand may have different care requirements from the bowl itself.

Inspect during routine use

Look for damage, sharp edges or worn surfaces and follow replacement guidance where necessary. Choose a shape you can reach easily for cleaning around the rim and base.

Cat feeding stations in small kitchens

A feeding station needs room around the bowls as well as a place for the stand. Plan it away from the litter area and outside routes where doors or feet repeatedly disturb it.

4.5L Automatic Cat Feeder with Timer
4.5L Automatic Cat Feeder with Timer — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Test the kitchen movements

Open cupboards, move chairs and consider cleaning access with the station footprint marked out. Include a feeder’s hopper lid and power cable route where applicable.

Choose manageable components

Removable bowls can make access easier, but confirm the actual cleaning instructions. Avoid fitting a dispenser tightly beneath a shelf if its lid must lift for refilling.

Identify removable parts

Check the instructions for the bowl, hopper and dispensing components. Do not immerse a powered unit or treat all removable parts as dishwasher-safe without confirmation.

Grooming tools

Maine Coon grooming kits: comparing the tools included

A grooming kit can contain brushes, combs and other accessories with different purposes. Read the exact contents rather than assuming a higher tool count means a better match for your routine.

Maine Coon Grooming Set | Cat Brush & Comb – The Cashmere Comb
Maine Coon Grooming Set | Cat Brush & Comb – The Cashmere Comb — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Check each component

Identify the type of brush or comb and the manufacturer’s intended use. Avoid assuming every tool in a multi-piece kit is appropriate for every coat condition.

Choose a calm setup

Use tools gently and follow their instructions. If the coat has tight mats or grooming is painful, ask a vet or qualified groomer rather than forcing a comb through the area.

Maine Coon Grooming Set | Cat Brush & Comb – The Cashmere Comb

Read the design details

Look at tooth spacing, brush type, handle and cleaning method where listed. Do not invent coat benefits from the colour or appearance of the tool.

Keep use gentle

Follow the instructions and stop if the cat is distressed or the tool catches painfully. A purchase guide cannot establish that one tool can safely remove every knot or mat.

Cat grooming tables: footprint and storage

Folding Cat Grooming Table 81 cm – The Grooming Station
Folding Cat Grooming Table 81 cm – The Grooming Station — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Measure the work area

Include space for your own position around the table rather than fitting the top into a narrow gap. Keep tools organised and follow all handling and safety instructions.

Check storage claims

Folding does not mean every part disappears into the same flat shape. Verify the folded measurements and any accessories that must be removed, and never leave a cat unattended on a raised table.

A Giant Paws example to compare

Folding Cat Grooming Table 81 cm – The Grooming Station

  • I want a stable surface reserved for coat-care sessions.

9-in-1 Cat Grooming Vacuum & Dryer Set – The Coat Salon — Giant Paws catalogue image.

Read the manual first

Identify which tools are intended for which tasks and follow the supplied settings and precautions. Do not infer a safe drying temperature or clipping technique from a product photograph.

Consider your cat’s response

Powered equipment changes the grooming environment. Introduce only as directed and stop if the cat is distressed; seek professional help for tasks outside your experience.

Separate handles and heads

A washable comb is not the same as a washable powered attachment. Follow the directions for each component rather than applying one cleaning method to the whole kit.

Plan storage

Let tools dry as instructed and store them securely between uses. Keep small accessories contained so the kit remains complete and pets cannot play with loose parts.

Compare physical features

Check grip design, tool length and head type where listed. Avoid assuming that a larger tool is automatically gentler or that it reaches every area comfortably.

Work within the tool’s purpose

Follow the intended use and avoid forcing the head into awkward areas. If a part of the coat cannot be handled comfortably, get advice rather than buying a more aggressive tool by guesswork.

Check the supplied guidance

Read the guards, attachments and permitted uses for the exact product. Do not assume instructions for a different model or animal apply to the set you choose.

Know when to ask for help

For tight mats, skin irritation or an uncertain technique, use a qualified groomer or vet. Choose a kit for tasks you can perform appropriately rather than treating the number of attachments as permission to attempt them all.
