Cat Tent House – The Koda Pod

Do Maine Coon cats get along with dogs?

Explore what helps Maine Coons live with dogs, including controlled introductions, separate feeding and escape routes that remain accessible.

Some Maine Coons share a home comfortably with suitable dogs, but success depends on both animals. A calm cat still needs protection from chasing, staring or intrusive play. The dog's history around cats and its ability to settle are especially important. Plan introductions with physical separation and controlled contact, following advice from the rescue, breeder or a qualified behaviour professional. The cat should have routes to move away and resting areas the dog cannot reach. Avoid relying on a high perch as the only escape if the dog can block the way down.

Feed the animals separately and supervise until you have good evidence that both are comfortable. If either animal is repeatedly frightened or highly aroused, slow the process and get help. Being described as a friendly breed does not remove the need for careful management. Check an escape route from the floor as well as from the top perch: the cat should not have to jump towards the dog to reach safety.
