Measure vertically from the finished floor to the ceiling at the exact point where the tree is intended to stand. Do not measure diagonally or rely on the room dimensions in an old listing.
Repeat the measurement to check consistency, and account for changes such as a rug, raised floor section or ceiling feature only as the manufacturer instructs. A suitable measuring tool and a second person can make the process easier without climbing on unstable furniture. Note nearby beams, coving, light fittings and any slope rather than treating the whole ceiling as a single flat surface. Record the measurement in the same units as the product specification. If the ceiling is uneven or the reading is close to a limit, give the supplier your actual measurements and photographs before selecting a configuration.
Write the measurement in both centimetres and metres to catch conversion mistakes: 245 cm is 2.45 m. Label each reading by position if you are considering two corners, since floors and ceilings may not be perfectly level.
