Many owners describe their Maine Coons as affectionate, but cuddling is an individual preference rather than a guaranteed breed feature. One cat may enjoy a lap, another may lean against you, and another may simply choose the same room. Those are different ways to be close, not a ranking of how much the cat likes you. Offer contact when the cat is relaxed and let it decide whether to continue. Watch for subtle signs that it has had enough, such as turning away or shifting position, rather than waiting for a swipe.
A spacious bed near your usual seat can give a large cat comfortable proximity without forcing it onto a small lap. If you want a reliably affectionate adult companion, discuss known behaviour with a rescue rather than choosing solely from a kitten's breed or appearance. Offer a resting space beside your seat as well as your lap; having an alternative makes it easier to see whether the cat wants contact or simply company.
