Existing holes should not be reused automatically. Their position, condition and original fixings may not match the new shelf's bracket or installation requirements.
A hole that held a different item successfully does not establish that it is suitable for cat furniture. Show the area to a competent installer if you are considering reuse, and provide the new product's instructions. They may need to assess the supporting material and whether the previous fixing has weakened or damaged the location. Do not fill a loose hole with improvised material to make a screw feel tighter. If new positions are required, check the wall for concealed services and follow the specified mounting arrangement. Keep the cat away until the shelf has been installed and checked correctly. Convenience should not override the requirements of the new connection.
Bring the new bracket template to the assessment. Holes that are only slightly misaligned still should not be joined by enlarging them casually or forcing the bracket sideways, because that changes the planned connection.
