Provide more than one route down by choosing a layout with accessible intermediate platforms and by positioning it so a suitable nearby landing area remains clear. Any supplementary step or furniture must be stable, appropriate for the cat and used according to its own instructions. Do not create a route from loose boxes, a rolling chair or a narrow decorative shelf. Sketch the descent from each sleeping area and consider what happens if another cat occupies the next platform.
Can the cat move to a different level without a difficult leap? The best arrangement depends on the individual animals' reach, confidence and mobility, so there is no universal spacing that suits every Maine Coon. Watch voluntary movement after installation and adjust the room if necessary. Never encourage a frightened cat to jump from a height simply to demonstrate that a route is possible.
Review the route from the highest bed and from every enclosed den, not just the ascent from floor level. A route that works going up may become awkward when the cat must turn around or pass a sleeping housemate.
