A powered litter tray is still part of your cat's essential daily access. Before a power interruption happens, find out what your exact model does when electricity stops and returns. Keep a suitable ordinary tray available so the cat is not dependent on an unfamiliar or inaccessible mechanism.

Find the model-specific answer
Check the manual for power-loss behaviour, restart instructions and any warnings about the position of the mechanism. Do not assume all automatic trays remain usable when switched off. Ask the seller if the manual does not explain this clearly. The Bothy and other powered models must each be assessed under their own instructions.
Keep a straightforward backup
Have an ordinary tray of a suitable size, familiar litter and cleaning supplies ready. Introduce that tray as an accessible option rather than keeping it packed away until an emergency. Its location should be quiet and reachable. A backup is particularly useful if a powered tray stops in a position that cannot be used safely.
Do not move the mechanism by hand
Do not force a drum, rake or drawer to release an obstruction unless the manual explicitly instructs that action. Keep cats away from an incomplete cycle or damaged equipment. Avoid improvised battery packs or power adapters; electrical compatibility and restart behaviour need confirmation for the model.
Check before returning to normal use
After power returns, follow the specified restart process and inspect for alerts, trapped material or unexpected movement. Keep the backup tray available until normal operation and the cat's access are confirmed. A cleaning cycle starting does not by itself establish that every function is correct.
Include the plan in a sitter handover
Leave the manual and the location of the ordinary tray with your care instructions. Explain who to contact if the powered unit cannot be used. If the cat strains to urinate or produces little or no urine, seek urgent veterinary care; do not attribute those signs to the equipment change.
