The current Bothy product page does not state which litter type, grain size or fill depth the automatic mechanism requires. Use the supplied manual for the exact unit and confirm compatibility before filling it; do not transfer a rule from another self-cleaning tray.
Ask for a positive compatibility list
Request the litter formats the unit is designed to use, plus any expressly excluded materials. A useful answer should identify relevant characteristics such as clumping behaviour, particle size or weight where the manufacturer uses them. Marketing words on a litter bag are not a substitute for the tray instructions.
Confirm the fill reference
Ask whether the unit has a minimum, maximum or target fill mark and how that mark should be read on a level floor. Do not estimate depth from a product photograph or from the Bothy's listed 80L interior capacity; that capacity is not a litter-fill instruction.
Keep the waste drawer separate
The Bothy has a separately listed 9L waste drawer. Requirements for a drawer bag or liner are not the same as requirements for the litter surface the cat uses. Confirm both consumables independently and do not place a liner beneath the litter unless the exact instructions permit it.
Plan a litter change deliberately
If you already own the unit and want to change litter, check the manual before mixing products or changing the fill amount. Record the previous and proposed products so support can understand the change. Keep a suitable ordinary tray available while resolving any compatibility question.
Check behaviour and machine operation separately
A compatible material still needs routine physical checks. Make sure the cat has access to a clean toileting area and that the mechanism completes its expected process. If the cat develops a worrying toileting change, seek veterinary advice rather than assuming the litter or machine is the only cause.
