Why Is Your Cat Suddenly Hungrier Than Usual?

A new, persistent increase in appetite should be discussed with a vet, especially when it comes with weight loss, increased thirst, vomiting, diarrhoea or a behaviour change. Hunger alone does not identify the cause.

Confirm what has changed

Measure the complete daily amount rather than judging by begging. Record every pouch, weighed portion of dry food, treat, food puzzle and food offered by other people. Check whether another pet is stealing meals or whether the recipe or pack feeding guide recently changed.

Track weight and accompanying signs

Use the same pet-safe scale and method if you can weigh your cat without stress. Note thirst, urine clumps, stools, vomiting, activity and coat condition. Cats Protection advises contacting a vet about appetite, weight or thirst changes; this applies even when a cat still seems lively.

Do not self-diagnose from appetite

Many different medical, dietary and household factors can alter eating behaviour. Do not start supplements, restrict food sharply or double portions based on an online list. Growing kittens, pregnant cats and cats with medical conditions need individual veterinary guidance.

Feed consistently while seeking advice

Unless the clinic tells you otherwise, keep the usual complete diet and a repeatable meal schedule. The Kitty Buffet can provide consistent bowl positions, but it cannot establish calorie needs. Take the food packaging and your written record to the appointment.
