A few cats drool lightly during familiar, relaxed interactions. New, persistent, excessive, blood-stained or foul-smelling drool is different and should be discussed with a vet.
Compare with your cat’s normal
Cats Protection notes that some cats dribble when content. Record when it happens, how long it lasts and whether the cat is purring, eating and behaving normally. A sudden change matters more than whether another person’s cat does the same thing.
Look for accompanying warning signs
Seek prompt help for pawing at the mouth, trouble eating or swallowing, bad breath, swelling, vomiting, weakness, breathing difficulty or possible contact with a toxin, plant, medicine or cleaning product. Breathing difficulty or suspected poisoning is an emergency.
Do not inspect a painful mouth by force
A frightened or painful cat can bite, and pulling the jaw open may worsen an injury. Do not remove string from the mouth, use human mouthwash or apply dental gel without advice. Let the clinic decide how urgently an oral examination is needed.
Keep the resting area observable
A washable bed such as the Velvet Nest may make a comfortable observation spot, but washability does not address the cause. Note wet patches, take a photo if useful and follow the vet’s instructions rather than waiting for the bedding to dry.
