What Does It Mean When a Cat Growls?

Treat a growl as a request for space. It may occur with fear, pain, guarding, conflict or intense arousal, but the sound alone cannot tell you which cause applies.

A retreat must remain easy to enter and leave; never use it to corner a cat.

What to do in the moment

  1. Stop reaching, stroking or moving closer.
  2. Give the cat a clear route away.
  3. Move children and other animals back calmly.
  4. Do not punish the warning or force an interaction.

Watch from a safe distance for flattened ears, tense posture, a lashing tail, staring or attempts to hide. A growl during a carrier struggle needs a different plan from one that appears when another cat blocks access to food.

Review resource placement, unfamiliar visitors, handling and recent changes. If growling is sudden, occurs when a body area is approached, or comes with appetite, movement or toileting changes, contact your vet. Pain can alter behaviour.
