How Do You Compare Calories per Pouch, Tin or 100g?

Convert calorie figures to the same unit before comparing them. “Per pouch”, “per tin” and “per 100g” can describe very different quantities, so placing the printed numbers side by side can mislead.

Weigh or count what is served; the bowl’s capacity is not a calorie measure.

A simple conversion

If a food provides kilocalories per 100g, multiply that figure by the grams served and divide by 100. For example, use the actual 70g serving—not the pack’s maximum capacity—when calculating that meal. If the manufacturer gives metabolisable energy per kilogram, divide by 10 to obtain the equivalent per 100g.

Count every part of the day

Include wet food, dry food, treats and any food used in puzzles. When two foods have different calorie densities, equal-looking portions need not supply equal energy. Our mixed wet-and-dry portion guide explains how to keep both parts in one daily total.

When the label is unclear

Ask the manufacturer for the calorie content and the basis used. A feeding guide is a starting point, not an individual prescription. Monitor body condition and ask your vet for a target intake when weight, growth, pregnancy or illness is relevant. Cats Protection’s feeding guidance recommends following pack instructions while adjusting for the individual cat.
