Do not automatically change food on the day of neutering. Follow the clinic’s post-operative instructions first, then review daily calories and body condition because energy needs may fall after neutering.
Follow the recovery instructions
The veterinary team may give specific advice about the first meal after anaesthesia. Appetite can be affected temporarily. Call the practice if your cat will not eat when expected, vomits repeatedly or seems unwell rather than trying multiple rich foods.
Recheck the whole daily allowance
Cats Protection notes that neutered cats may need fewer calories. Count wet food, dry food, treats and food used in toys. Do not reduce an individual ration sharply without veterinary advice, especially for a growing kitten.
Use body condition, not breed size alone
A Maine Coon can be structurally large without needing unlimited food. Weigh your cat periodically and ask the vet to show you how to assess ribs, waist and abdominal outline. Growth and ideal condition matter more than a target copied from another cat.
Measure consistently
Use the same scale and record the total daily quantity before dividing it into meals. The Kitty Buffet keeps two bowls together, but owners still need to measure what goes into them and remove leftovers safely.
