Start planning foreign travel with a cat months, not days, before departure. Speak to your vet early, check the official rules for every country and route involved, and confirm the requirements for returning home. Do not rely on an airline summary or an old pet-travel checklist alone.
Begin with the veterinary conversation
Cats Protection recommends speaking to a vet well before international travel, ideally three to four months ahead for a first trip. Ask whether the practice can issue any required certification or whether you need an Official Veterinarian.
Bring the destination, dates, route, carrier arrangements and current vaccination and microchip records. The vet can explain health considerations for the individual cat and the documented steps within their remit.
Build one route-specific checklist
- Rules for leaving Great Britain or your part of the UK
- Entry rules for the destination
- Requirements for every transit country
- Airline, ferry or rail carrier specifications
- Microchip and vaccination evidence
- Certificates, treatments or appointments with their precise timing
- Rules for the planned return journey
Use current government and destination-authority pages. Requirements can change, and a document valid for one journey may not cover another.
Check identity details character by character

Plan welfare at both ends
Confirm the transport carrier, maximum journey segments, temperature controls, water arrangements, overnight accommodation and veterinary access at the destination. Leave room for delays
Book time for appointments, laboratory processing or document corrections. Recheck the official rules shortly before travel and again before returning. If the schedule cannot accommodate the required sequence, change the travel plan rather than guessing that a border official will make an exception.
