The right way to remove cat hair depends on your sofa’s fabric, care instructions and the tools available. No single method is best for every upholstery type. Start gently and check the result on a hidden area before treating a whole cushion.
Read the care instructions first
Check whether the cover can be removed and how it may be cleaned. A zip does not automatically mean a cover is machine washable. Avoid adding water, sprays or cleaning products unless the sofa’s instructions allow them.
Use a compatible vacuum attachment
An upholstery attachment can help collect hair and debris from cushions, seams and crevices. Use the suction setting and attachment recommended for your fabric and machine; stop if the fabric pulls, snags or changes appearance.
Some manufacturers make tools specifically for hair on upholstery. For example, Dyson describes its tangle-free turbine tool for carpets and upholstery. That is a model-specific example, not evidence that every attachment suits every sofa.
Try a roller on suitable dry fabric
For smaller areas or between vacuuming, a reusable roller may be convenient. Our pet hair remover roller uses a back-and-forth action and collects hair in an opening chamber. It needs no batteries or disposable adhesive sheets.
Test a hidden patch, use it only on suitable dry surfaces and empty the chamber as needed. Results depend on the material and hair. Do not increase pressure repeatedly if the fabric catches or the tool is ineffective.
Be cautious with improvised tools
Adhesive tape, stiff brushes, rubber blades and damp gloves are not automatically safe for delicate upholstery. They may mark or damage a surface. Follow the furniture manufacturer’s advice before trying an improvised method.
Make upkeep easier
A washable throw on a favourite resting spot can simplify cleaning if it suits your sofa and household. Clean it according to its label. Gentle coat care can remove loose hair, but cannot stop natural shedding.
