Prepare one quiet, kitten-proofed room before arrival, with food, water, litter, a hiding place, a bed, a scratching surface and safe toys. Let the kitten expand into the home gradually rather than opening every room at once.
Choose and inspect the room
Cats Protection recommends a dedicated sanctuary room. Close windows, block unsafe gaps, secure blind cords and cables, remove toxic plants and put medicines and cleaners away. Check inside recliners and behind appliances.
Separate essential resources
Place food and water apart from the litter tray, with a clear route between them. Provide at least one easy-entry tray and scoop it frequently. In a multi-cat home, the newcomer needs their own resources during introductions.
Give hiding and observing options
A cardboard box can be a useful first hide. The Koda Pod is a purpose-made enclosed bed if its opening and position suit the kitten. Do not pull a hiding kitten out to socialise.
Expand at the kitten’s pace
Sit quietly, offer play and allow approach. Open another secured area only when the kitten is eating, toileting and exploring confidently. Keep external doors and windows controlled throughout.
