Minoxidil hair-loss treatments can severely poison cats. If exposure is possible, contact a veterinary practice immediately and provide the exact product details; do not wait for symptoms.
Map every transfer route
Cats Protection lists minoxidil among substances dangerous to cats. Risk is not limited to drinking from the bottle: a cat may lick treated skin, contact a spill, sleep on contaminated bedding or touch a used applicator.
Build separation into the routine
Apply and store the product in a room the cat cannot enter. Wash hands as directed, secure the cap and clean the application area. Follow medical instructions about drying and covering treated skin before any contact with pets.
Control fabrics and waste
Keep towels, pillowcases, tissues, gloves and applicators away from cats until washed or disposed of safely. Do not leave the bottle on a bedside table or bathroom shelf. Retain the packaging for ingredient and strength information.
Respond without delay
Move the cat away from the source and call a vet. State the product name, concentration, possible amount, time and type of contact. Do not wash or induce vomiting unless a professional tells you how to do so safely.
