A replacement cover can be useful when the bed underneath remains suitable, but only if the cover is intended to fit it. Large, XL and similar labels do not establish compatibility. Start with the bed's model and construction, then check whether a replacement is actually offered.
Check that the cover is designed to come off
Look for the product's care instructions rather than pulling at a seam or apparent opening. Some beds are cleaned as a whole; others have removable sections. Match the shape and fastenings
Confirm the exact model and size. Compare the base, raised sides, corners and any fastening position. An outer rectangular measurement does not describe the shape around padded bolsters. A loose or over-tight cover may change how the bed sits, so avoid choosing a near-match solely by width.
Read the separate care requirements
Check whether the cover and filling have different washing or drying instructions. Keep a note of the original labels. Do not assume a replacement fabric accepts the same temperature or cleaning products as the previous one. Let every part dry as directed before reassembly.
Ask about bespoke textiles early
If you are commissioning a tailored piece, ask whether resting pads or covers can be removed and replaced. Have the answer included in the specification. A matching colour in the future may not be available, so discuss any preferred spare-cover arrangement before ordering rather than assuming it is part of the service.
Decide what actually needs replacing
If the filling or structure is damaged, a new cover will not resolve that problem. If the bed remains sound and its intended cover is available, compare the complete replacement cost with a new suitable bed. Keep the cat's preferred resting shape in the decision.
