Groom a Selkirk Rex gently about twice a week as a starting point, adjusting for coat length, moulting and the individual cat. Over-brushing can disrupt the curls, while neglected tangles can tighten close to the skin.
Understand the coat in front of you
TICA describes the Selkirk Rex as a medium-to-large breed with dense, curly long- or short-haired coats. Feel through the coat with your fingers before choosing a tool; do not assume every curl pattern needs the same pressure.
Work in small sections
Start where the cat accepts touch, part the coat and comb from the ends towards the roots without dragging. Pay attention behind the ears, under the front legs and around trousers. Stop at resistance rather than pulling through a mat.
Preserve comfort and curl
Keep sessions brief and allow breaks. TICA advises combing roughly twice weekly and bathing only occasionally. After grooming, lightly arrange the coat with clean hands rather than repeatedly brushing it flat.
Choose tools by task
A wide-toothed comb and a finer finishing tool can serve different areas. The Cashmere Comb set provides multiple grooming pieces, but suitability depends on the individual coat and handling tolerance.
