An upright tail often appears when a cat approaches in a friendly, confident greeting. It is a useful clue, not a promise that the cat wants to be lifted or stroked for a long time.
Notice how the approach unfolds
A relaxed cat may walk towards you with the tail vertical, ears neutral and body loose. Some tails curve at the tip or quiver during an excited greeting. Pause and let the cat close the final distance.
Offer a low-pressure response
Turn slightly side-on, lower a hand and let the cat sniff or rub. If they move away, that is the answer. Children can learn to watch for continued approach rather than following a retreating cat.
One body part is never enough
