Replace or retire a cat toy when wear exposes loose, sharp, swallowable or entangling parts. A favourite toy still needs the same safety check as a new one.
A five-point inspection
- Pull gently on seams and attachments.
- Check strings and elastic for fraying.
- Look for exposed stuffing, wire or hard edges.
- Confirm bells and small pieces cannot detach.
- Check that the toy still works as its maker intended.
Do not rely on glue, knots or tape unless the manufacturer supplies an approved repair method. Remove uncertain items immediately.
Watch how the cat uses it
A toy designed for chasing may not be safe for chewing. Supervise unfamiliar play and put wand toys away afterwards. If material may have been swallowed, contact a vet promptly and do not induce vomiting unless instructed.
