Why Do Cats Hiss and What Should You Do?

Direct answer: a hiss usually means the cat wants distance. Stop advancing, lower the pressure and give them a clear route to retreat instead of punishing or forcing contact.

Find the immediate trigger

Another animal, a visitor, handling, a blocked exit or pain may be involved. Observe from a safe distance and remove the trigger when you can do so without cornering the cat.

Do not turn a warning into a confrontation

Shouting, spraying water or reaching into a hiding place can increase fear. Let the cat settle, then review how the room and interaction were arranged.

Seek help for new or persistent hissing

A sudden behaviour change or hissing during touch can be associated with discomfort. Contact a vet first; a qualified behaviourist may help after medical causes have been considered.

Where furniture helps: The Koda Pod may support this part of the routine. Check the live product page for current specifications and suitability; furniture does not replace veterinary or behaviour advice.
