Check what the current listings actually confirm
The Bothy is listed with automatic cleaning and app connectivity, an 80L interior capacity, a 9L waste drawer and overall dimensions of 48cm wide × 56cm high × 48cm deep. The Gentleman’s Abode is listed as a self-cleaning globe tray measuring 50 × 50 × 53cm, with a 20cm entry opening.
Neither current description states an operating sound level, a measurement distance or the duration of a cleaning cycle. Those omissions do not prove that either tray is loud or quiet. They mean the sound question remains unanswered by the published specification.
Ask to hear the whole operating sequence
Request one continuous demonstration from the same position, without background music or a voiceover covering the mechanism. Ask the person demonstrating it to identify:
- the exact product and current model;
- when a cleaning cycle starts and finishes;
- whether the unit makes separate start, end or warning sounds;
- which sound comes from the motor, moving litter, waste drawer or another part;
- whether app or control settings change the timing of operation.
The demonstration should follow the supplied instructions with an approved litter type and normal assembly. A phone recording will not create a laboratory-grade measurement, but an unedited sequence is more useful than several silent close-ups. Request a measured figure carefully
If a sound level is available, ask for the units, distance from the tray, stage of the cycle and test environment. A number measured close to the motor cannot be compared fairly with another recorded across a furnished room. Ask whether the figure is a peak or an average and whether it comes from the manufacturer’s documentation.
Do not create your own comparison by playing two unrelated online videos at the same phone volume. Microphones, editing, room echo and playback settings can make the result misleading.
Plan the room around more than sound
A quieter position is not automatically a suitable litter-tray position. The cat still needs unobstructed access, and a person needs room to empty waste, clean the unit and reach the controls. An automatic tray also needs the power and clearance specified for the model.

If the unit begins making an unexpected sound, stop experimenting and check the troubleshooting instructions for that exact model. Do not open a housing, lubricate a part or force a mechanism unless the supplied guidance instructs you to do so.

Compare noise alongside usable interior space, entry size, operating requirements, maintenance and app features—not as a single claim that decides the whole purchase.
