If an automatic litter tray stops during a cleaning cycle, prevent access to the moving area, provide a suitable ordinary tray and follow the manual for that exact model. Do not push, turn or dismantle the mechanism unless the manufacturer’s instructions explicitly tell you to do so.

Protect litter access first
A stalled unit may not offer a normal entrance or usable litter surface. Put the familiar backup tray in a quiet, accessible place and keep the cat away from exposed or partly moved components. Do not wait for remote support before providing that alternative.
Record the state before changing it
A short record can make the manual or support conversation clearer. Note:
- the model and approximate time the cycle stopped;
- the position of the mechanism without touching it;
- any light, sound, display code or app message;
- whether the waste drawer was at its indicated limit;
- recent cleaning, litter or setup changes.
A photograph can help, provided it can be taken without reaching into the mechanism. An error code should be interpreted only through the current manual or official support information for the unit.
Use the model's instructed sequence
Check the manual for its stop, reset, obstruction and power-isolation steps. Different automatic trays can behave differently after power returns, so unplugging, restarting or clearing material should not be improvised. Never bypass a sensor or force a rotating part.
After the cycle completes
Before returning the unit to normal use, confirm that the tray is assembled as instructed, the entrance is clear, the litter surface is available and no warning remains. Continue to offer the backup tray until you are satisfied the unit is operating normally. If the same fault returns, stop experimenting and contact the relevant support route with your record.
Separate machine faults from cat concerns
This checklist addresses the appliance, not a cat’s health. If the cat cannot pass urine or faeces, appears distressed, or shows another worrying change, contact a veterinary professional promptly rather than waiting for the tray problem to be solved.
