A cat should travel inside a suitable, securely positioned carrier—not loose in the car. Prepare the carrier and destination before opening the house door, keep the vehicle comfortable, and never leave the cat unattended in a parked car.
Check the carrier before the journey
Cats Protection advises helping cats become familiar with their carrier before travel. Inspect the fastenings, ventilation, door and base. Each cat should have an individual carrier.
Use our large-cat carrier measurement guide to check both the inside and opening. A carrier sold as “XL” is not automatically suitable for every Maine Coon or other large cat.
Prepare the car while the cat is secure indoors
- Set a comfortable temperature without directing strong heating or air conditioning straight at the carrier.
- Remove loose objects that could strike it.
- Position and restrain it according to the carrier and vehicle instructions.
- Close windows and doors before moving the cat from the home.
- Keep spare absorbent bedding and cleaning supplies accessible.
Do not open the carrier beside an open car door or at a roadside stop. A harness is not a substitute for the closed carrier inside a moving vehicle.
Ask the vet about individual needs
Seek veterinary advice when the cat has a health condition, previous travel sickness or severe distress. Follow the vet’s feeding and medicine instructions rather than giving a human sedative or copying another animal’s plan.
For a longer journey, Cats Protection recommends planning regular checks and avoiding excessive daily travel where possible. Decide in advance where a secure indoor room will be available; “we will find somewhere” is not an arrival plan.
Control the arrival
Carry the closed carrier directly into the prepared room, shut external doors and windows, then open it and let the cat emerge voluntarily. The pictured Koda Pod is a home hideaway, not a travel carrier; do not use furniture packaging or an open bed as transport.
