A large cat needs a carrier assessed by its usable interior, entrance and stated limits. The outside measurements alone can be misleading because handles, walls and door frames occupy space. Start with a purpose-made carrier, not a bed with a convenient-looking opening.
Request usable internal dimensions
Check the space available for the cat to stand, turn and lie comfortably, following the carrier manufacturer's guidance. Include the effect of suitable bedding. Do not estimate interior fit from a photograph of a smaller cat.
Check the door opening separately
A roomy interior can still have an awkward entrance. Compare the clear opening and the way the door operates. Top access or a removable upper section may affect handling, but any opening system must remain secure when assembled for travel.
Read the stated limits and fastening method
Confirm the carrier's weight limit and intended transport use. Inspect catches and connections, and follow instructions for carrying and securing it. Do not assume a stronger-looking handle increases the approved limit.
