How Do You Clean Soft Cat Toys Safely?

Giant Paws Paw-villian wooden figure-eight scratcher and play board.

Clean a soft cat toy according to its care label, using the mildest suitable method and rinsing thoroughly. A toy with split seams, exposed stuffing, damaged elastic, loose parts or a wet battery compartment should be removed rather than washed and returned.

Inspect before water touches it

Look for a removable catnip pouch, squeaker, bell, electronics or glued decoration. Check every seam and attachment. If no care instructions are available, contact the maker; do not assume a toy is machine washable simply because the outer fabric feels soft.

Use a cat-safe cleaning routine

Follow the label temperature and cycle. Avoid disinfectants, bleach, strongly perfumed products and essential oils unless the manufacturer and veterinary guidance specifically confirm safe use and complete rinsing. Wash food-stained toys separately from litter equipment.

Dry completely and inspect again

Damp filling can stay wet after the surface feels dry. Air-dry in a place the cat cannot access, then squeeze and smell the centre before returning it. Check that seams, elastic and attachments remained secure through washing. Discard anything distorted or still musty.

Include furniture attachments

Inspect the play balls and fixings on products such as Scratch Central without soaking wooden or sisal components unless the product instructions allow it. Cats Protection recommends checking toys for wear and storing stringed toys after supervised use.
