Stop using a cat toy when seams open, stuffing or filling escapes, string frays, elastic stretches, plastic cracks or any small component becomes loose. A favourite toy is not worth keeping once its construction changes.
Inspect before the game
Cats Protection recommends checking toys for signs of wear. Pull gently on attachments, look along seams and examine the point where a cord joins a wand. Check fixed furniture toys as well as items stored in a basket.
Match the response to the damage
A removable accessory can be taken away immediately; a damaged load-bearing part of furniture needs the entire item kept out of use. Do not substitute household string, staples or an unapproved screw. Ask the maker about compatible parts.
Store supervised toys after use
Fishing-rod, ribbon and elastic toys should be put away in a closed place when no adult is playing. Keep an inventory so a missing piece is noticed. Contact a vet promptly if a part may have been swallowed.
