Do not treat cats as pets that can simply be left for several days with a large bowl of food. Cats Protection gives around 12 hours as the maximum time a typical cat should be left alone, and says this should be occasional rather than routine. Many cats need checks sooner.
The clock is only the first question
A young kitten, older cat, cat with medical needs or animal needing medication may require a different arrangement. Ask the veterinary team when care instructions affect timing. An automatic feeder, fountain or litter tray does not supervise health, notice a fault or respond to an emergency.
Count the full absence from the last reliable check to the next one. “One night” can exceed the intended window when travel is delayed.
Write down what a carer must do
- Exact food and portion instructions, including where supplies are stored
- Fresh-water routine and every water location
- Litter-tray cleaning and what counts as an unusual change
- Medication instructions provided by the vet
- Your regular vet, emergency vet and contact details
- Carrier location and how to secure the home
- Where the cat normally rests or hides
Do a trial visit while you are present. The carer should know which cat flaps, windows and doors must remain secured and how to confirm they have actually seen each cat—not simply refilled a bowl.
Do not buy a second cat as a substitute for care

Leave choices, not hazards

Check the temperature forecast and household systems before leaving. If the plan only works while every powered device works perfectly, add a human check and a backup.
Direct answer: around 12 hours is an approximate maximum for many adult cats, not a target or a rule for every cat. Longer absences need reliable care.
