Keep cats away from flames and hot surfaces with a secure guard, direct supervision and a clear exclusion zone. The hazard continues after the flame goes out because metal, ash and embers can remain hot.
Guard more than the opening
Cats Protection advises guarding open fireplaces. A suitable barrier should prevent access to flame, embers and hot doors without becoming unstable when touched. Follow the appliance maker’s clearance requirements.
Move attractive objects away
Relocate beds, blankets, scratchers and dangling toys outside the heat and spark zone. Do not run a wand toy towards a stove. Keep the cat’s route through the room from passing between people and the fire.
Supervise lighting and cooling
Account for the cat before opening a stove door or carrying fuel. Use a lidded metal container for cold ash according to local fire-safety guidance. Never assume grey ash is cool enough to investigate.
Offer warmth at a safe distance
Place a comfortable option such as the Velvet Nest only where it meets the appliance’s stated clearance and cannot slide closer. A warm bed does not replace a physical guard.
