An open window is not safe merely because a cat has ignored it before. High openings can lead to falls, tilted windows can trap a cat, and nearby furniture can turn an unreachable gap into an easy route. Check the window and the room together.
Test every way the window is used
Cats Protection identifies high open windows and tilted windows as household hazards. Inspect each position used for ventilation, not only the fully closed position.
- Can the cat reach the opening from a sill, radiator, desk or tower?
- Could a tilted opening narrow around the body?
- Does a latch prevent the window moving further?
- Is a fitted screen designed and secured for pet safety?
- Can a person open the window without bypassing the safety measure?
Ordinary insect mesh should not be assumed to restrain a climbing or leaning cat. Follow the screen manufacturer’s installation, inspection and weight limitations, and obtain professional advice where the window or building requires it.
Recheck after moving cat furniture
Tall furniture changes access. The pictured Cream Estate has multiple levels and a tall top perch, so its location should be assessed against nearby windows before assembly. A tower is not a window barrier and should not be used to hold a screen in place.

Keep safe ventilation practical
A safety arrangement must work during the household’s normal routine. Write down which windows may be opened, how far and under what supervision. Tell visitors, cleaners and tradespeople before they enter the room.
Inspect screens, catches and frames for damage. If a safe setup cannot be confirmed, keep the window closed and ventilate another way while the cat is in that room.
Direct answer: make the opening physically secure for the actual cat and window, then check that no bed, shelf or tower creates a route around the protection.
