A rug can visually define a cat area, but it also changes the surface beneath the furniture. Before adding one, check the furniture instructions and the floor's care requirements. Appearance is only one part of the decision.
Keep the intended support surface
Do not place a base partly on a rug and partly off it. Check whether the furniture requires a firm, level surface or another specified arrangement. An added soft layer is not an approved way to correct a damaged or uneven base.
Check the floor and rug compatibility
Use the floor manufacturer's care guidance for backing materials and coverings. Do not assume every rubber or non-slip backing is suitable for every finish. Avoid adhesives or improvised pads without an appropriate method.
Leave edges out of walking routes
Consider whether the rug curls, shifts or catches at the cat's approach or the person's path. Keep bowls and cleaning supplies from creating wet patches underneath. Inspect the hidden floor area as part of routine care.
Assess automatic equipment separately
A mat or rug under an automatic litter unit may conflict with its installation requirements. Follow the exact unit's instructions rather than extending advice from a simple bed or post. Different products can require different supporting surfaces.
