A fragrance that seems fresh to a person may be unwelcome in a cat's toileting space. Cats Protection generally recommends unscented litter, with regular cleaning used to manage smells. Added perfume is not a substitute for an appropriate tray routine.
Separate fragrance from cleanliness
A pleasant scent does not show that waste has been removed or surfaces are clean. Check the tray and surrounding area directly. Avoid adding household perfume, essential oils or an unapproved deodoriser to the litter.
Keep the cat's preference in view
If the cat uses a familiar unscented litter comfortably, there may be no reason to change it for fragrance. When a change is necessary, avoid replacing every familiar part of the setup at once. Keep a suitable alternative accessible during the transition.
Check machine compatibility separately
Unscented does not mean compatible with every automatic tray. For The Bothy, confirm the required material and fill instructions. Fragrance, particle size and clumping behaviour are different aspects of a litter product.
Investigate persistent odour or avoidance
Review cleaning, waste handling and any damaged surfaces rather than repeatedly adding scent. If the cat suddenly avoids the tray or their toileting changes, contact your vet. Do not assume a stronger fragrance will solve the underlying issue.
