Open and enclosed litter trays offer different layouts. The useful question is which arrangement gives your individual cat comfortable access and usable space, while allowing you to keep the tray clean.
What changes with a cover?
A hood can obscure the contents and provide enclosure, but it also limits the opening and the space above the cat. Some cats prefer enclosure; others do not. A cover can retain smells inside, so it is not a replacement for cleaning. An open tray makes the interior easier to see, but its side height still affects access.

Compare the dimensions that your cat uses
- Measure the usable litter area, not only the outside shell.
- For a covered tray, check the entrance and internal headroom.
- For either style, check the step-over height and space to turn.
- Allow space around the tray for access and for removing any cover during cleaning.
