Keep washing-machine and tumble-dryer doors closed when they are not being loaded, and physically check the drum immediately before every cycle. Never assume another person has already checked.
Why the machines attract cats
A dark drum containing warm laundry can look like a sheltered sleeping place. An open door also invites investigation. This is why memory alone is not enough; the final check must happen at the controls before pressing start.
Use one repeatable sequence
Cats Protection advises keeping appliance doors shut and checking before use. Remove laundry, look and feel around the drum, account for the cat, close the door, then start. If interrupted, begin the check again.
Manage shared households
Tell children, visitors and housemates that no one starts a cycle without checking. Do not leave a half-loaded drum open. Keep detergent, capsules and dryer products in a closed cupboard inaccessible to cats.
Offer a safer retreat
A dedicated bed in another room can provide an alternative quiet space. The Koda Pod is an enclosed cat bed, but a bed does not replace closing and checking the appliances every time.
