A puffed tail indicates high arousal, commonly fear, surprise or conflict. It is not an invitation to touch or a reliable sign that the cat is being “naughty”.
Create space first
Stop approaching. Give the cat a clear route to a familiar hiding or elevated place and separate other animals without putting hands between them. Reduce noise and movement. Do not chase the cat to reassure them.
Identify what changed
Look for an unfamiliar visitor, sudden sound, outdoor animal at a window, new object or blocked route. A briefly puffed tail during surprise may settle once the trigger passes; repeated episodes call for a closer look at the environment.
Read the rest of the body
