There is no single headroom allowance that suits every cat tree or every large cat. The useful measurement is the clear vertical space from the finished surface of the highest usable perch to the nearest ceiling, beam, shelf or light fitting. It should accommodate your individual cat getting onto the perch, standing, sitting and turning in the way they normally do.
That answer is different from asking whether the tower itself fits beneath the ceiling. A cat tree can fit as an object while its upper resting place is cramped or partly obstructed.
Measure from the surface the cat actually uses
Record the room height at the exact proposed position. Then obtain the height of the highest usable resting surface after full assembly. Subtract the second figure from the first, but also note any obstruction that hangs lower than the main ceiling.
Use the top of the cushion, pad or platform covering as the starting point rather than the underside of the platform. If a raised rim or nearby post reduces the way onto the perch, record that separately. Do not estimate the result by counting levels in a product photograph; perspective and unlabelled components can be misleading. Overall tower height is not necessarily perch height
Current Giant Paws listings illustrate the distinction:
- The Cat-Cave lists a 210cm overall height and several open platforms.
- The Ultimate PawHouse lists a 216cm overall height with open platforms and hammock-style rests.
- The Feline Sovereign Spire lists a 240–280cm adjustment range for its floor-to-ceiling fitting.
Those figures describe the complete structures or adjustment range; the current descriptions do not state the height of each highest usable perch. A top cap, post, decorative part or ceiling-contact fitting may sit above the resting surface. Request the platform height rather than treating overall height as a substitute.
Use your cat's own posture as the comparison
On the floor, observe your cat in a normal upright sit and when turning before settling. Measure the vertical space they actually occupy without pressing, stretching or repositioning them for the exercise. Add the clearance required for natural movement and any platform rim, but do not rely on a universal number based only on breed name.
A Maine Coon label cannot tell you the sitting height, preferred posture or mobility of one individual. If your cat has a condition that changes movement or balance, ask your veterinary team about appropriate access rather than assuming a taller gap is the only consideration.
Check the route as well as the space above
Headroom on the perch does not prove that the approach works. Ask for the height and usable area of the previous level, the horizontal and vertical gap between levels, and anything that narrows the landing. Consider the direction from which your cat arrives and leaves.
For a pressure-mounted tower, keep installation requirements separate from resting-space measurements. The ceiling-contact assembly must be used only on surfaces and within the adjustment range permitted by the instructions. A perch should not be moved or a fitting altered simply to manufacture extra headroom.
A concise question to send before ordering
Give Giant Paws the product name, your ceiling height at the intended position and your cat's relevant measurements. Then ask: “What is the finished height of the highest usable perch, measured to its top surface, and are there any parts or fittings that reduce the clear space above or beside it?”
Keep the answer with your room notes. If the platform height is unavailable, do not infer it from the overall dimensions. Compare another tower or position instead.
