Changes in jumping, grooming or litter-tray use can be signs of pain. Do not dismiss them as ordinary ageing or diagnose arthritis from behaviour alone. Arrange a veterinary assessment while considering ways to make everyday access easier.
What to report
Tell your vet about hesitation before jumping, stiffness, reduced play, grooming difficulties or discomfort when handled. Note when changes began and whether they are worsening. Cats Protection’s arthritis guide explains common signs and care.
Reduce difficult access
A stable step or gently inclined ramp may help some cats reach a preferred resting spot. Its width, grip, spacing and installation must suit the cat and the furniture. Check the route down too, and offer comfortable alternatives at floor level.
Do not stack loose objects or assume a ramp supplied with a cat tree is appropriate for arthritis. The Feline Veterinary Medical Association describes home modifications to discuss with your veterinary team.
Check the litter-tray entrance
Compare the entry height and usable floor area with your cat’s abilities. An enclosed or automatic tray is not inherently easier to access. Do not choose one for a stiff cat solely because its external size is described as large.
Keep an accessible tray available while assessing changes. New toileting problems also need veterinary advice; do not assume furniture is the only cause.
Offer comfortable resting places
Choose a bed your cat can enter, turn in and leave comfortably. A deep rim may be a barrier even when the cushion is soft. No Giant Paws bed should be treated as a proven arthritis treatment.
