There's no universal answer — and that's the point
"How much weight can this hold?" is the right question to ask before buying a cat tower for a large breed, but there isn't a single industry-standard answer. Load capacity depends entirely on how a specific tower is built, and it can vary hugely between products that look similar in photos.
What actually determines load capacity
- Base footprint and weight. A wide, heavy base resists tipping far better than a tall, narrow one — this matters more for a large cat jumping onto a tower than most buyers expect, because the force of a landing is greater than the cat's static weight.
- Post and platform material. Solid wood dowels or posts generally take more sustained load than particle board or hollow tubing.
- Fixings, not just materials. Screws into pre-drilled dowel joints tend to loosen under repeated jumping impact faster than bolted or interlocking joins.
- Static vs dynamic load. A platform that comfortably holds a stationary 8kg cat may behave very differently when that same cat leaps onto it from a height.
What to ask a supplier before you buy
- Is the stated weight limit per platform, or for the whole structure?
- Is it a static load rating or has it been tested under jumping/impact conditions?
- What are the posts and platforms actually made from, not just the surface covering?
- How is the tower fixed to the wall or floor, if at all, and does that affect the rating?
Why we're not quoting a number here
We'd rather tell you honestly that we're still finalising verified load testing with our suppliers than publish a figure we can't stand behind. When we have confirmed, tested ratings for specific towers, we'll publish them on the individual product pages rather than as a general claim.
