String, thread, ribbon, hair ties and rubber bands are not safe toys to leave with a cat. They can be swallowed and cause a serious internal obstruction, even when the cat has played with them before without incident.
Remove the everyday supply
Cats Protection warns about string, wool and elastic bands. Use closed drawers or lidded containers for sewing supplies, gift ribbon, dental floss and hair accessories. Check floors after wrapping gifts or doing crafts.
Supervise purpose-made toys
Wand and fishing-rod toys should be used with a person present and put away afterwards. Inspect attachments before each game. A loose cord or small detached part changes a toy’s safety.
Act promptly after suspected swallowing
Contact a vet immediately if an item is missing and may have been swallowed, or if string is visible from the mouth or bottom. Do not pull it: tension can injure internal tissues. Follow veterinary instructions.
Create a clear play zone
Use robust, size-appropriate toys in an uncluttered area and provide a retreat such as the Koda Pod outside the play route. Storage and supervision remain the essential controls.
